Homeschooling in Morocco

Hello everyone,

Homeschooling your children as an expat in Morocco will definitely come with its load of challenges. Here is a special call to parents who are already homeschooling their children or who plan on doing so to share any information they might have.

Should you opt for homeschooling, is it legal in Morocco ? Do you require to register your child or do you need any kind of permission / exemption from the authorities ?  If it is not legal, what alternative option/s do you have ?

How do you go about getting all the necessary educational resources (books, syllabus, notes etc…) to pursue your children's education in Morocco ? Does it depend on the curriculum ?

What do you add in your homeschooling techniques to help educate your child that might not be offered or available in traditional schooling ?

How do you socialise homeschooled children in Morocco by providing them opportunities to interact with other children ?

If you have any interest in homeschooling, could you please share your views on the pros and cons ?

Thank you for sharing your experience,
Bhavna

Hello, because my children had little verbal experience with Arabic I initially put them in an American Moroccan accredited school, but there was too much racism and they weren't educating them just handing them papers and saying do the work if you have any problems raise your hand. That's not teaching, so they didn't have a good experience. I homeschooled in the US, so I just found a curriculum that was okay to use internationally. Everything is online and I picked what I wanted my children to learn. They have an Arabic and French tutor. We also go on field trips and vacations throughout the year because they can have class anywhere there is internet. Most of my supplies came from the US as they don't have much to accommodate here in Morocco or I just haven't come across it as of yet. They go outside daily to play though they limit themselves as to who they are around because of them being Americans. We travel a lot, so everywhere we go I use it as an educational experience too.

Bhavna, thank you for your assistance. My name is Eric btw.

As far as some of the questions you asked, it is possible to do homeschooling online of course (and of course it's legal as well). There are accredited K-12 online programs based in the US and other English-speaking countries.

But as I thought more about it, I want our daughter, who is 11, to have the friends and go to the school (Ifrane School) she's been going to for the last 2+ years. This gets to your question "How do you socialise homeschooled children in Morocco by providing them opportunities to interact with other children?"

Anyone who homeschools their child(ren) anywhere faces this same challenge, and for me, I want my daughter to socialize with other kids, especially kids from different nationalities. Our daughter is in class with people from different countries in Africa, Morocco of course, Europe, and North America.

Also, most online homeschooling programs are as expensive as the private, English-taught school here in Ifrane (about $5,000+).

Acutally, Fayyatha provided some great information, so thank you Fayyatha!

Eric

Thanks for the forum. I will be living in Ouarzazate and would like to know if there are other expats there who homeschool.
Thanks

Hello. I am Moroccan. my children are Americans. they are enrolled in the american school in casablanca. me and my husband are keen to do homeschooling for our children as the costs of school are getting very heavy. do you have any information about homeschooling in casablanca? Thank you for your answers

Have you found a solution yet? We recently arrived to Morocco. We are using an online curriculum called Calvert from USA. It's a good curriculum from our experience. They offer a free trial to allow time to go over it to see it if works for you.

We moved from chicago 6 months ago and I have my daughter online school called bridgeway academy 3k to 3.5k a year , accredited school very easy to follow and can do classes on its own time , very happy with. You can call or email teachers , we just registered on usa address to attend the school so they don't know we live in Morocco

We in kenitra now but will be moving to Asilah to live , how and where should the kids make friends ? I have 15 year old daughter, maybe organize something for them

The Calvert curriculum that we use isn't accredited but we like it. We have time to figure it all out before our children need to be tested. They are learning a lot and so are we.
We are in south Morocco in the city of Ouarzazate.
Our girls are 10 and 6.

Oh nice , my husband originally from ouzanne  the north

Is there American schools in tangier?? When they open ? How much ?

Hello Editarink,

if you are looking for an american school in tangier, there is one there.

Good morning, check the US Embassy website for American accreditation for schools in Morocco. They will say they are, but aren't on the list which means they are NGOs. I live in Fes, there was a school “The American School” who my daughter attended for a split second. Due to some issues that occurred and me deciding to do some research I found they weren't accredited as the owner stated, but actually a NGO. This school eventually shut down during COVID lockdown and the owner left Morocco. The reason for the shut down was because it was revealed the school was or have never had any form of American accreditation. There aren't many American accredited institutions in Morocco. Also, make sure to register yourself with travel.gov it will update you with information and just in case. I have a US address also and I use a program called Acellus Academy it's out of Missouri. Im not from Missouri, but any child can use it from anywhere in the world as long as they're American. It allows us the freedom of learning anywhere. They not attached to a class period. I'm a retired educator so this also helps if needed. Prayerfully this helped you. Enjoy your day
