Hello! My husband has been offered a great opportunity - his company will allow him to work in any country where they have offices. We're looking at Scotland. Just starting the process of looking around, finding a city we like (Glasgow looks promising), getting educated on education for our two children, and dreaming. We have 12 months to wait until he can apply for an inter-company transfer visa. I'd love to chat with other families who have made a move like this.

Hi again.
I've just answered the question you asked elsewhere regarding the visa SOC code. If you're entering the UK as the family of a person on a Tier 2 Intra-company Transfer visa, then you will be able to work in the UK, you don't need to qualify in your own right. The UK Government website related to Tier 2 visas can be found at the following link.
Hope this helps.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
My wife (Dutch National) did it and it worked very well; it took her 20 minutes online and she got her permanent residence a few days later; you don't get a residence card like in other countries, just an e-letter confirming her new status; we printed off half a dozen copies just in case.
This link will take you to the relevant UK gov website where you can begin the process. The only thing I recall was she needed to have a biometric passport and a compatible phone that could scan her passport.
Unfortunately, Japan is not in the EU, so your friend will have had to go through the "normal" immigration system; yes, that is expensive.
Hope this helps.

Hi again.
We do have a housing section at the top of the Forum; you can always check that out.
In general; rental accommodation in the UK is always in short supply; what many people do is opt for something like an Airbnb for the short-term; then look for something they like when they get here; it gives you a bit of flexibility just in case you don't like where you originally chose, or find something you like better elsewhere.
No landlord is going to hold something for you until you get here; they just care about getting someone in paying the rent as soon as possible. There is normally a deposit (x amount of months rent) involved, so my advice is to use something temporary at first (like a hotel, or Airbnb), then look around when you get here.
Watch out for scammers; people have come on here telling us they rented a house/flat that either didn't exist, or somebody else was already living there.
Hope this helps.

Hi
I'm from Kolkata,India. Was studying in Glasgow for my masters , recently had to return to India because my student visa expired. However, I have fallen in love with Scotland and I wish to go back there soon again. I'm trying to apply to PhDs and Jobs in Scotland.
Cheers
Hi! My wife and I are planning a move to Edinburgh for fall 2021. I am applying to University of Edinburgh Business School in hopes of moving on a Student visa. I will have the GI Bill pay for school and a housing stipend.
The biggest challenge I anticipate is bringing our two small dogs. I hear it can be a pain to find a rental that allows pets.
The short story on us is that we visited Scotland on a whim in Feb of this year and we fell head over heels in love with Edinburgh. Ever since returning home we’ve been trying to figure out how to move there and I think we are getting to a solid plan. We want to surround ourselves with the amazing people, delicious food, and breathtaking landscapes of Scotland. We are very excited!
Hi There,
I definitely qualify as a newbie!!
I currently live in Calgary, AB and have been plotting a move to Scotland for the last couple of years. I have been to Scotland twice on holiday and did not want to come back (apparently that's all it took to be enamored with Scotland!)
My plan is to apply for the UK Ancestry Visa (father was born in the UK), but I have still not decided where in Scotland I want to move to. I have many questions which I need to start to putting to paper.
One of the first things I was hoping to know was the don'ts that others discovered through their own journey to Scotland.
In any case, very happy I found this site and looking forward to connecting with some fantastic folk!!
Thanks for reading,
Heather
Hi all,we moved over here a year ago today (30 July 2019) and have landed up in Alloa. The culture difference here compared to Cape Town is so much different and the people are all friendly and eager to help. At this stage I`m unemployed-used to work for Dreams Beds in Stirling but with Covid etc that came to an end. Still loving it here and intend to apply for Leave to Remain as soon as I am able to
Hello all!
My husband, two kids (ages 13 and 16), and I fell in love with Edinburgh last year and want to move next summer or potentially earlier. We now live in Providence, RI in the US, with our two cats and a dog.
My mother was born in the UK, so I went through the process to claim my UK citizenship and now have a UK passport.
I’m a hospice and pediatric palliative care chaplain and spiritual director, and would love to work full time in pediatric chaplaincy. My husband is a writer and consultant who has worked from home for years.
My 16 year old is planning on studying abroad for her last year of high school in the US.
Our biggest concern is our 13 year old son: he is already doing distance learning because of Covid 19 and we really want to try and supplement his education for the next year to prepare him for school in Scotland. He is academically advanced and is looking for a challenge.
I would love to connect to resources and other expats, especially those familiar with the us education system, to help get my son ready.
Also curious to connect anyone with insights about whether my 12 years of interfaith chaplaincy experience in the us will make me an attractive candidate in Scotland.
Thanks!!
Hi and welcome to the Forum.
Well, the schools are back in the whole of the UK; I think it's early days to say how this will work out in the long term. Scotland has a different education system in as much as the diploma's all the way through have different names; but they are all highly regarded, or should I say they used to be, mainly because the politicians decided to interfere with something that wasn't broken and I suspect whether you think it's good or bad depends on your politics. Anyway, I recommend you check how the schools are performing before you decide on a school. Education Scotland are the Regulatory body responsible for Scottish education; this link will take you to there website where you'll find their reports on respective schools. My only real comment is you need to consider the impact of your son returning to the US and whether his experience in Scotland will have provided him with acceptable qualifications to consider Uni in the USA. I should add that Scotland has some very good Uni's, but if this is just to satisfy an itch his Mom has, then perhaps more thought should be given to the long-term and perhaps wait until he's finished his education.
Interfaith chaplaincy in the NHS; follow this link, you may have struck it lucky.
If you have any further specific questions, please come back to us.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. It was initially our intention to wait until he was in uni to make the move. However, he really wants to move now and has no interest in returning to the US, nor do we. He has his sights on St. Andrews.
Hi again.
The other thing you should consider is getting your kids UK passports now.

I always dreamed to live there. 7 years ago, I went for the first time to Scotland and since then I go one or two times a year! I felt that Scotland was my home. Anyways... 😅 I plan now to go live there for real and I would like advices as to what should I start first. I know the things I have to do but I don't know in wich order 😅 Im a bit confused. I thank you all already for your help and support and thank you for the welcome 😊 See you soon I hope. Long live Scotland (Alba) 🏴😀 Jamie ✌🏼
Hi everyone,
Moving to Glasgow from Bedford in a few days to do the move, and stay permanently by the end of November 2020. Hope to meet people as long as the restrictions and all allow it. Expecting to get involved and learn about the city and discovering some countryside as much as I can in my free time.
Kind regards
