Grimaldi Lines do a weekly Rome (Civitavecchia) - Malta ferry

and Grandi Navi Veloci do Livorno to Malta

Actually looking at their website, GNV also seem to do a ferry from Genova now too, even less driving required. The ferry durations are between 34 and 48 hours roughly, depending on where you depart from.

Or you could go mad and choose to drive all the way down to Sicily and get the 90 minute catamaran with Virtu Ferries.
