Costa da caparica / buy property advise

Post new topic

Jenifermessi

Hello, in October I am about to move permanently to Portugal.  After quite a bit of research I decided that it is best to move close to Lisbon.  I have a budget of € 200,000 to buy an apartment, in some forums they have recommended me to buy in Costa da Caparica for my budget (I like the beach and I would like something close), I was seeing in Cascáis, Estoril and Oeiras, but with my budget  was not enough.

Is it true that Costa da Caparica is a good place to live?
Do you recommend buying there or in another area with my budget?
is it true that the prices listed on the internet are negotiable by up to 20%?

We bought an apartment in Lisbon, we negotiated 25% less the asking price. There are no official comps in Portugal like in the US, therefore sellers came up with their asking price. Please do not purchase at the asking price.

Algarve is much better.

Hi, my wife and I are in a very similar situation and looking for an apartment at about the same price point. Did you end up purchasing in Costa Da Caparica?

We are looking there, in Lisbon, and we might begin exploring in the hills up toward Sintra.

As a general matter not specific to portugal, I strongly suggest if you will be new to a country or region of a country, it is best to rent first, before making a permanent decision of buying.  Rent will allow you the time and flexibility to explore towns and even neighborhoods.   So consider renting for at least 6 months before buying.

Good luck and please keep us posted!

Hey jonnycpava, thanks for your thoughts and yes, I completely agree. We're now renting in Lisbon and will likely rent here through the end of the year. I think we'll commit to buying a place in Jan/Feb (watching the market to see if it pulls back some).

I hired a Portugese lawyer (recommended by an American friend) to help me with the purchase (visited the apartment that I like, negotiated the price ( 25% less than the asking price), utility, sales contract etc...)

I am a Canadian considering Caparica/Setubal, Sao Martinho do Porto, the Algarve and Estoril area to retire in. Would love to have a community of Canadian ex-pats close by for in-person connections and events. Any recommendations on best communities for this?
