Employment and new work practices in Kenya

Sharing my Experiences:

The last time I went to office was on 19th march 2020 in Nairobi. After that till date it's working from home only. Initially it was frustrating as I cannot see my colleagues, remain at home only, can't move out. Lots of rumours every day. It seems everything got stopped.
Gradually adopting the new normal of working from home remotely, attending trainings/webinars. Zoom became the Boon to carry out all official meetings n work.
Things started getting settled and hope started restoring....even started moving out on weekends to see friends n office colleagues with necessary precautions.
One thing will mention here that my work load increased at home, in office I was not having this much work.
Jobs n Employment are difficult in local market, Have seen people going out of job but didn't see new joinings.
Really an unprecedented times for all of us.
There's lot to mention but it will be too long n boring. Let me end here with a hope Life will return soon for all of us.

Will eventually return to normal so we can resume our lives

The pandemic has undoubtedly affected the labour market.

Working from home was encouraged by both government and private sector entities to contain the spread of the virus.

However, as the numbers consistently decreased there was a slow return to work which is still being implemented in phases.

As a legal practitioner, we have witnessed a lot of redundancies and business restructuring affecting lots o employees. The concept of unpaid leave has emerged during the period of the pandemic despite lacking a concrete grounding in labour laws.

It is also worth noting that the amnesty period for foreign nationals in Kenya whose stay exceeds 6 months has lapsed.

Any foreign national who was visiting is required to apply for a residence permit or leave within 2 weeks as per communication from Department of Immigration Services.

However, normalcy is slowly resuming.
