Problem & looking for Solutions. I'm in America and she is in Vietnam

Post new topic

MikeTVN

I'm in America and my Fiance' is in Vietnam. We have been wanting to get married for almost one year now but we can not because of the borders being closed so I can not come to Vietnam. She can not get a visa to come to America. We can not get immigration started till we meet in person (we have not yet but Whatsapp for 3 or 4 hours day) and/or get married. I have looked into us meeting at another country but every country we've looked into we I can go, is not so willing  to allow one from Vietnam to enter. Partly due to not having a large enough bank account and such. And even if those requirements are met she will not be able to get back into Vietnam. So..........we painfully wait for the borders to open. The only possible solution I've thought of so far is that when Thailand opens up for Americans that we meet there and get married there and start immigration to the US at that point. Then if she can't back into Vietnam I will stay with her there for one year or however long it takes for her US Visa to get approved. This would be expensive and I don't even know if we could both stay there in Thailand for there visa policies.
I have joined FB groups with similar situations and see others getting together but none from Vietnam being resolved.
Any ideas or suggestion.....? Thanks.

Mike there are no solutions as of yet to ease the travel dilemma of entry and exit to many of the Asian country's. With the vaccines  availability increasing and other countries gaining confidence that safeguards are in place restrictions may ease, From articles I have read it appears in the Mar. Apr. time frame something may occur to get tourism going again. Is your fiance living in one of the large cities Saigon, Hanoi, where stress of this covid is easing and need of tourism his heating up. or more in the central area ,  Wish you early success, If I come across more positive info. will pass it along.

You may want to contact some legal firms in Thailand and check whether a Vietnamese can marry in Thailand now. Years back the VN govt stopped issuing paperwork at their embassy. I looked into it and it wasnt possible. Things may have changed by now.

You have not met your fiancée yet?

Are you talking about the same woman to whom you said you've already sent money to purchase a house?

Yes the same women. I said as much in the referenced post. But please hold the criticism if that's where you're headed. I know how it sounds and I trust my own judgement and would hope others do as well.

North central, small city north of Da Nang.

Check Turkey.  No travel restrictions, many VNmse there, direct flights from both US and VN, and low cost of living.  I just returned from Vietnam through there and it was a terrific place to hangout for a month.  Happy to go back anytime.  Ankara has all the major embassies and is in a great place for living, very central, great reach to Black Sea, Med, Istanbul, everywhere.  That would be my best suggestion.  They have about 3 million Syrian refugees still living on the street.  They are not going to notice one viet-sized woman and a lovestruck American in the midst of all that mayhem. Good luck.

Thailand is opening up even to tourist visa with (COE) ins. Quarantine testing etc. etc.  You should apply for an Non OA retirement visa though.  This will give you an 1 year visa that is renewable.  You need to show 800 k baht (about $24k) in assets, bank.  Quarantine runs about 50-100k, insurance etc. etc. but then you can live there.  You can try Cambodia as well cheaper to entry.  Siem Reap is Ok.   Try Thaivisa.com forums they are a lot more active and deal with the marriage issues

Thanks. I will look into this option. Is it safe? How did you get back into Vietnam?

The quarantine estimate I assume was in Baht? Perhaps this will change after a vaccine shot. Can you tell me what COE ins is? I believe Cambodia has a $3k deposit which one should assume is a charge. Thanks for this I will check out Thaivisa.com.

He does have a point.

Forums are not the best place to mention everything.

I would never go down the road you are heading, seen too many guys taken to the cleaners.

Good luck.

Certificate of entry https://thaiembdc.org/visas/.  The Thailand have it more on line than the Vietnamese.  You could also try the skilled worker route into Vietnam as an esl teacher.  Not sure how much teaching the sponsor company would asked for then get married here and change to a TRC.

I doubt an ESL teacher is deemed as a skilled specialist.

Maybe those people were qualified teachers, meaning they have a degree in Education.
ESL teachers just need a degree in any subject.
Didn't hear them say anything about their qualifications.

Good luck to them if they were able to do it.

Not meant to criticize, but rather to put your full situation in context.

Also, as you probably know, we often get trolls in the forum, and sometimes when you quote back their own words to them, they blink...

Cheers to you for making yourself and someone else happy.

I echo what Colin said, but we are certainly not the boss or judge of you.

We are all painfully waiting for borders to open. My 92 yo aunt Mary in California is confined to her retirement home, she only goes outside to walk the dog. The last time I visited she was 91. I won't be able to see her until she is 93.

How do we cope? Patience. You gotta have patience or you go bananas.

A forewarning: When the Vietnam border opens, you won't be able to whip over here, get hitched, and fly her back. You must be aware US immigration suspects everyone of green card fraud. Have you researched the difference between post-marriage immigrant visa, post-marriage non-immigrant visa, and a K-1 fiancée visa? I have often heard (useful?) that fiancée visas are processed faster, meaning you wouldn't want to get married in Vietnam if you are in a hurry. How long will you need to be together in Vietnam to apply for visa AND be accepted? I don't know, perhaps others on the forum know firsthand. One detail that is scrutinized is how long and how well you know each other, producing records of phone calls, photos together, familiarity with each other's families, etc.

My case is different. I moved to Vietnam, married here, and we live here. Yet the process to obtain a non-immigrant visa (we were only traveling to the US for a 2 week tourist trip) required us to bring piles of documentation to the interview at the Consulate, to prove we were married for the right reason. It helped that we were married 3 years, had sufficient bank accounts, had taken round trips to Thailand before applying.

So my second suggestion is that you google those visa terms to research your best approach, and talk to immigration lawyers because rules are fluid. And because time is money, money should save you time.

My all time favorite TV programs is on TLC & called "90 days Fiancé" its about people from USA men & women bringing their potential marriage partners to the USA on 90 days fiancé visa & they have to get married within the 90 days (well I think thats the jist of it). OK call me an old woman if you like but its epic!

Thanks much for the clarification Ocean!! It's a very solid relationship on terms of new technology and circumstance of Covid. I video frequently with everyone in her life. Her parents in a small village in N. Vn, her sister in Germany. Her best friend at her place of business, her neighbors, her customers at her nail Solon etc. So I can understand peoples warnings (but not the attempted humiliation that some want to do) when hearing my story and I really do appreciate understanding and support.

Yes thanks Go. We are patient at this point and I just want to be proactive with alternative options (meeting or married in another country) instead of waiting till borders open there since it seems that may be a long time. If I knew for example it was about another six month I would just wait since it would certainly be easier in some ways.

I do know the difference in K1 (fiancee' visa), K3 (Marriage visa), immediate Relative visa (green card). You are correct the K1 is the fastest by a few months. Each will take roughly one year.

However if I can into VN I will be in no hurry as we will stay at our house there in relative comfort and opt for the Immediate Family green card visa. We will marry and start the immigration process to the US. Also if I like it enough we will perhaps even live there in Vn and move from N. Vn to Da Nang, HCMC or Vung Tau for the weather.

This happens to everyone if we make a post with a link and then we go back and make a simple edit of anything in the post.

Then the link goes under review and it stays there forever, it seems.

So if you're going to post a link, make sure your post is perfect before you send it because if you go back and edit it, you will end up with link under review.

Or maybe the website has you flagged personally based on previous links posted?

Who knows?

I try to not be too negative or suspicious because it can defeat all that is good. I mean I've been through a long vetting process of the whole situation. However I will heed your advice of being 'careful'. I sort of know what you mean about the ' There can be a lot going on in the background". Care to elaborate on this?

Personally I think that spending time in Vietnam, seeing her life up close, and getting married accompanied by her family, is the better option if you are financially able to live in Vietnam for a while. Also checking out the wide variety of cities/climates while you wait. You may find that the inexpensive tropical country of your wife suits you too. Some people split their time between two home countries. Lots of options. Good luck.  :top:

Personally I think that spending time in Vietnam, seeing her life up close, and getting married accompanied by her family, is the better option if you are financially able to live in Vietnam for a while. Also checking out the wide variety of cities/climates while you wait. You may find that the inexpensive tropical country of your wife suits you too. Some people split their time between two home countries. Lots of options. Good luck.  :top:

My guess would be that to qualify for entry, you would have to be vigorously sponsored by the school.  English language centers have commonly avoided even supporting employees for work permits, let alone a permit to enter the country.  They seem to prefer the cheap high turnover model of employment.
