The advice would be to decline to give a bribe and be prepared to report the officer asking for it.

A dashcam (particularly one that records speed) is a useful thing, as the Police know that being reported/recorded for requesting a bribe is a serious offence and they are less likely to push for a bribe.  Being accused of speeding, even if you knew you weren't, was a common occurrence at police roadblocks.

Of course if you were breaking the law, then you are much more likely to have to face the consequences.  Where a few years ago, a bribe would 'fix' the situation, now you are much more likely to be charged and the fines are high.  Bear in mind that speed traps can be several km from where they actually pull you over

I never had problem with police, they stopped me once because of me not being in the right lane at a roundabout.

Please don't give bribes. It is killing us and our nation. Each time one gives a bribe, the bribe-taker learns that you are a bribe giver -- you will always have to give.

I've lived in Kenya for 40+ years. I am now a Kenyan citizen (that took 7 years after I applied -- but I never gave a shilling to anyone). Whites are asked for bribes less frequently than are non-whites. I have my suspicions as to why, but I don't know for sure.

Unless things have recently changed, this isn't my experience at all.  As a driver, I have tended to be stopped and accused of some trumped up 'offence', then asked for Ksh 3000 or so, on a regular basis.  With my (Kenyan) wife driving (me in the car), the same police on the same route rarely stop and if they do, don't ask her for a bribe.

I also agree that bribes should not be paid as it only serves to sustain the culture of corruption.  Police will try intimidation to extort money, but are also afraid of being reported - a camera in the car is a useful weapon, particularly if you are a person who struggles with negotiation/knowing the right words at the right time.

Often the person requesting a bribe knows that you are between a rock and a hard place!
