Building or renovating?

The Wandered

I know this question is remarkably broad but does anyone have direct experience of building a new house versus renovating an existing but dilapidated house?

I am currently looking at riads and there are some that are 'doer upers' and quite reasonably priced. I am wondering whether it makes more financial sense to build from new or get one of these existing properties and invest in renovation.

Any experience, tips or suggestions gratefully received.

Well. I can say that it has always been easier for me to remodel a house than to build it from scratch. After all, building from scratch implies laying the foundation. It takes a lot of resources.

The answer depends on your budget and goals. If you've got the funds, building from scratch can be the way to go - you get to create a space that's exactly how you want it and doesn't come with any of the headaches of an older property.
