Learning Portuguese with Netflix/tv ...

nilonilonilo

Hi,
I would like to improve my Portuguese by watching Portuguese films/series ... However, most of the stuff I find on Netflix seems to be in Brazilian Portuguese ...

Any recommendations for European Portuguese? On Netflix or elsewhere ...

Thanks,
Nil

Streaming Platforms:

- Netflix, HBO Portugal
- Portuguese platforms: Opto SIC, RTP Play

Since 2016, Netflix had content in european portuguese, through an agreement with the Portuguese media group SIC. That agreement ended in 2020, when SIC launched its own streaming platform OPTO.

After that, almost none Portuguese contents on Netflix, but this platform is keen to change this, with new content launched since last May.

Instead, HBO Portugal, for a much lower price, has a wide range of european portuguese contents:  Vidago Palace, Mistérios de Lisboa, A Herdade, Auga Seca, ...

RTP Play

RTP Play is a totally free access streaming platform of RTP (Radio Televisão Portuguesa), and no paid subscription is required to use any service available.

- More than 150,000 contents organised by themes
- HD Contents, both live and on demand
- More than 20 live Radio and TV channels:

Live TV channels: RTP1 (mainstream), RTP2, RTP3 (news), RTP international, RTP Africa, RTP Memória (Recall old TV programmes), RTP Açores, RTP Madeira

Live Radio Antena 1 (main channel), Antena 2 (classic music), Antena 3 (for young people),...

RTP Play is available outside the Portuguese territory. However, some content such as programmes, movies, series and live broadcasts do not have broadcasting rights so they are not available outside.

It has several documentaries, movies and series from several countries, ALL subtitled in European Portuguese.

Regarding foreign documentaries, voiceover is in Portuguese, but both voiceover and any testimonies in other languages are ALL subtitled in European Portuguese. You may need to choose the "CC option" (with subtitles) there.

Please note:

1. All movies/series are subtitled in European Portuguese. In Portugal, movies are not dubbed, contrary to what happens in most European countries. All media contents are presented on all TV channels, streaming platforms and in cinemas, ALWAYS in their native language.

2. In Portugal, the flashing 888 (or 887) number on the top right/left corner of your TV screen at the start/during most portuguese programmes (not LIVE TV programmes / "DIRETO"...) is there as a notification for you to be informed that there are Portuguese subtitles available, should you be interested to set them on (by using teletext).

Terrific post, as per usual!

RTP Play  outside of Portugal ?

I have this app on my tv.   The restrictions on what you can watch are enormous.  Almost everything you click on brings up the message  'Not viewable outside Portugal '.

There are some programmes  which do come up as viewable...........such as Visita Guiada  in the CULTURE  section.
HOWever, even these do not seem to have subtitle ( in Portuguese for HoH I mean ) availability.
The 888  thing just does not work outside the country.

Anyone have a solution for being able to read the Portuguese subtitles outside Portugal?
I wonder if the people in charge at RTP even know this is an issue ?

I tried RTP Play on my computer, with a VPN, so I could set my location on Portugal. Tried a few things in the documentary section, they seemed to work, with possibility to switch on the Portuguese subtitles.
