Issues in Haiti

Post new topic

Hello all, just wondering if any of you DR. expats are worried about Haiti and potential civil war after the presidents assassination? How will it further affect DR. with potential max exodus of future refugees and such. This is not a political debate or anything, just wondering if anyone has any concerns how their life in DR might be affected by such.

As a long time resident I am always aware of what is going on over in Haiti.  We have seen escalations a fair number if times.  If course we have seen a number if natural disasters as well.

When this happened Dominicans immediately called for closing the boarder and the president did exactly that.

I do not have any increased sense of insecurity at all.  That could change but I am not expecting it.

Agree with what Planner said.

I think the biggest impact to DR would be financial impact to those farmers and others who sell to Haitians near the border. The border was initially closed completely, preventing any commerce.  I read that there was a very significant number of eggs that would go bad if they weren’t sold to Haiti as planned. (IIRC - millions of pesos worth per day?) Fortunately, the decision to block commerce has changed. That’s better for everyone - Haitians won’t have further food shortages and the DR merchants and farmers won’t be negatively impacted.

Is the border open again?

Only for some commercial movement apparently.

With the wife of the dead president of Haiti running for office to replace him, what could go wrong next?

Another way to ask the question is will the outcome of the election make any difference at all?   I expect not.

Wow this will be interesting to watch!  I hope for the people of Haiti they get democracy, stability and a caring government.  I am asking for too much most likely.

Probably no affect on the dr at all.....as usual.

Anything that effects Haiti has huge potential to effect the DR.
