@planner thanks for answering!  So healthcare: public health clinics that any one can go to gringos or the poor.

public healthcare if you are working allows you to go to a different level of care? call it BETTER.

insurance through the US that pays for an expats care  in the BETTER hospitals?

and private pay in BETTER is affordable even ifinaurance wont pay the coverage.

Ok pregnancy is covered as long as she is not already pregnant when you get the policy. 

Public. Hospitals are available to everyone.  Care is not very good but is better than nothing.

Coverage when you have a legal job or a family member or a retiree is a basic insurance that is paid for and it's basic and way better than nothing.

Additional or stand alone insurance varies in level of coverage provided.  By USA standards it's very inexpensive! 

Care paid out of pocket is always available and price depends where you go and what needs to be done.  Can you afford that?  No idea!

US insurance may cover some things.  Many are you pay and the insurance will reimburse.

If you plan to spend most of your time in DR, local medical insurance is a must - unless you are independently wealthy and are fine paying cash up front for all your health care needs!

We've been very pleased with our coverage through Humano. Our primary care docs here in Las Terrenas do not accept our insurance, so we pay 3000 DOP ($53) at the end of the appointment and then submit through the Humano app for a 2000 DOP reimbursement.

With Dave's surgery last January, the hospital and surgeon were paid directly by Humano, with only a small copay for the hospital ($150).
