prescription medication and international transfers

Dear all,

I'm new here and would love your tips/help/feedback.

I am potentially moving to Hanoi for work in January, and having done some research, I have come across 2 things that might be 'deal breakers'.
1. I have heard that transferring money internationally can be a problem. I will set up a basic HSBC account and I need to make a monthly payment to the UK. I will have a work contract and the company will be paying my salary into my HSBC Vietnam account. (So not cash). My personal experience is online banking where it is easy to make International transfers.

2. I currently take s prescription drug for Crohn's disease. It's called Mesalamine. I have searched for a definitive answer online, but nothing definite. It seems it will be ok, but I find it difficult to uproot myself, without solid information.

Thank you all so much for your help and advice!
Very much appreciated.

If you can show where money comes from such as your job, then sending money out is not an issue.

The drug you want is readily available, I checked for it online.

I have 2 international accounts & regularly transfer money out & providing you have a paper trail (which you have ) you will have no problems transferring money out. BUT......

1    You should understand your VND will be changed to GBP & then sent out & you should compare exchange rates & fee's charged to do it between banks before you commit to a particular bank.

2    If you have a HSBC account in UK this might not be relevant but for fairly small amounts you might have Intermediary bank charges which % to sum sent out might be high as there is usually a minimum charge.

The international banks I use are Standard Chartered & VIB (Vietnam International Bank) & I have transferred out with on line banking with both these banks & both have different costs & exchange rates. Both their online banking sites are very good & simple to use.

Yes I agree with the others that your needed medicine is available. I have had some issues getting medicine in the quantities and dosages I wanted. Even a 30 day supply was questioned. It’s because of the huge drug black market.

Hi Mitchel,
A simple answer.
!/. Money transfers no problems ever encountered. Be wise choose a large well known bank
2/. Medicine. An immense probl;em in Vietnam. I suggest you bring a large supply of your medicine, get friends to bring some it they visit and top up when you get hols. I have terrible problems with the medical system here, Best rec is to examine Korean hospitals/clinics.

Best of Luck.

Hi Nick,
Have you had a specific problem getting what you need, is there a certain med that you can't get?

There are sources in HCMC that get meds brought in as well as the International Hospital Pharmacy's that have a good range.
