My wife and I would like to learn conversational Maltese

Digital UK Nomad

We are now living in Malta and are looking to learn conversational Maltese.  Does anybody have any recommendations and or experience in learning Maltese?

We live in Bahar ic-Cagahaq and expecting to pay for a good tutor.

Il-lejla t-tajba u tmiem il-ġimgħa sabiħ :-)

I am not a native speaker, can't really speak Maltese,
but could help with grammatical issues.

I was talking to a friend yesterday who had Maltese lessons and
whenever she speaks to the locals in Maltese they reply in English.

yes, that's what I experienced too.
But those I knew better and for a longer time and those who knew that I was learning Maltese also answered me in Maltese.

Maltese is a tribal language. Almost everybody in Malta is proud to speak English. However, if a foreigner is married to a Maltese person it is expected the foreigner  learns the Maltese language. This means he/she is respecting the Maltese culture.

I agree completely with you Hanselmar. Learning Maltese language is an indication of respecting the Maltese culture. I married into a Maltese speaking family and whilst they did their best to communicate with me in English, I was able to teach myself Maltese in about 2 years. I found watching Maltese TV and listening to Maltese radio stations helped me a lot.

When I learned English in Bournemouth about 40 years ago one of the lecturers said:" In Rome do as the Romans do." I say:" in Malta do as the Maltese do."
