I could not believe I could get a online process website for a actual document issuing me a NIF number.

e-residence.com

It took three days, just as they promised.  Very very happy.

Hope this helps.

You welcome. My wife and I are tying to guage the turnaround time when you file for residency permit in PT.  We read up to 4 months. Have you heard if they are doing it any faster? Thank you.
All of you are doing a great job. Hope to contribute more as I learn.

My NIF took 1 month and 150 euros with Lisbob.

Well, I didn't pay for my NIF. I actually didn't know you had to pay for it. Maybe you have to pay for the service company that helps you with getting a NIF.

Thanks for the e-residency referral.  They provide the services I will need soon.

yes it's free.

Just curious, why is it that you always need some lawyer or some agency to do any paperwork required to get NIF or NHR or any legal paper? I thought it's cheaper to live in Portugal ?  it looks like any document you're required can't be acquired without paying some service company or lawyer. i'm just wondering why so much bureaucracy. Is that the norm in all EU countries?

Hi,

Why don't you do it yourself ? You just have to go to the finance office  with your id. That's what I did in Lisbon and it was free. Don't fall into those traps of hiring a lawyer for simple things.

Hi Julia,
Great advised. I think i'll follow that path and try to do it myself. I was just wonder about the majority of expat posting concerning NIF and NHR are using lawyers or agency.
I immigrated in US in 1974 and never once use any lawyer or agency in applying for Visa , opening bank account and Social security Identity  number. Annual tax return processing is the only thing i stumbled and have to someone do it for me.
best regards

Goodmorning just an enquiry about the N I F number, I have a U.K passport, I am married to a beautiful Portuguese lady, we bought a apartment in a suburb of Lisbon, the apartment is registered on my wife's name, I have a marriage certificate and my passport, would that be enough to get a N I F number?

Hi Alex,

To get the NIF you only need to have a fixed address in Portugal and a passport. In your case, there is no problem at all.

Best Regards

To my knowledge one only needs a fixed address somewhere to apply for a NIF. So the address doesn't have to be in Portugal, but could be in another EU country. At least that is what I see on my inicial NIF paper. At least for EU citizens the NIF is the first thing to get. With the NIF it is then possible to organize other things like a Portuguese bank account or a rental agreement. Once one has moved into a more permanent home one has to update the NIF details to reflect the new address. All pretty easy.

Thank you.
