Hello everybody,

Moving to Malta is a challenge in itself, but even more when you decide to go alone. If this was your case when you arrived, we would like you to share your experience. It might help other people who are also preparing for this new life in Malta.

Do you have any tips for people who are about to move to Malta on their own? Is the country suitable, for instance, for a single woman?

What was your state of mind when you arrived in Malta?

What type of accommodation did you choose: house-share, self-contained accommodation or apartment complex?

How did your integration go once settled? Do you think that being alone made it easier to make friends?

Did you encounter any particular difficulties, being alone when you arrived? If you had to do it all over again, would you take a chance?

Thank you for your contribution!

My parents came 50 years ago and I 30 years ago so I cannot be much help with present conditions.  I think online groups are your best bet to begin with.  Good luck.

Hi
I moved to Malta,10 years ago on my own, initially to Sliema but now live in Mellieha.
Then my now husband came over 6 months later

Suggestions would be to check out several different locations before settling on one as  they can be very diverse and when you first arrive the island doesn't seem that big however after a while you'll start to notice the difference between living near where you work and living at the other side of the island.

Gozo which is literally 10 mins away by ferry is a lot quieter than Malta on the whole but people do commute to Malta to work every day

There is a large ex pat community over here who can be the best font of knowledge for everyday things.
There are also many expat social groups .. meetup.com is probably a good place to look and also facebook groups.  There are some local ones ( eg Mellieha People ) as well as more generic Malta ones
Be aware it can take time to get a bank account and your ID etc sorted out and life is a lot more relaxed over here so sometimes things can take a little longer than you expect to get done, I think this is great as it means you have time to stop and smell the roses so to speak :) but it can also be a little frustrating..

Most people live in apartments .. however there are some lovely houses.
I find being not too far away from the sea and beaches is great .. and also there are lots of amazing walks and history here.
the healthcare here is excellent and most people goto private doctors at the local chemist as its only about €10 per visit but there are also walk in clinics and the hospital is really state of the art. However you do need proof your either paying social security here or have private health insurance ( there are also several private hospitals)
At the moment there are a lot of entry level jobs IE Shop work, restaurant work etc and www.keepmeposted.com is a good place to look.

We have very little crime and I think its a great place to live .. although I have to admit I do have to get off the rock from time to time when possible
Hope this helps:)
