Hi - I'm Paul -
Just arrived in Medellin and loving it. Considering a move here, but also exploring Costa Rica, Panama, and Portugal.

I've been traveling internationally all my life, and I'm currently on a 90 day work travel tour.
I own a few companies in the marketing space, which affords me the opportunity to work from anywhere.

Looking for the best co working spaces in El Poblado or close by, that offers day passes when Im in town. any ideas?

tybeau

Hi all,
My name is Paul and my wife (who is Colombian from Barranquilla) are seriously considering moving there when I retire in a couple of years or so.   We own a condo in Almeda del Rio now which is fine but it is too small for us to live in.   We are planning another visit later this year and I'd really enjoy meeting other expats to learn more about their experiences and maybe some tips to consider prior to moving.  It feels a bit overwhelming to me right now...lots of questions!
Thanks, and I'm glad to have found this site!

Hi There,

First off, thanks so much for running this forum.  I have had some lonely days as all expats can probably have where they miss home, and might feel a bit alone in a new country, so it can be very helpful to have a community like this to reach out to, share ideas, help each other, and perhaps even meet up.   Luckily, the exploration and change far outweighs the lonely moments, so I know I made the right decision

My expat story, I have spent the last 6 months in Cucuta, Colombia for work, where I have had a really great time, lots of green and nature around, super hot, but its ok! I dont go out much during the day, and if i do it will probably involve a pool, or somewhere that is quickily replaced by indoor dining with AC :)

I lived in Lima, Peru for 5 years for work, and still go back sometimes, and although the weather was generally less hot, that created a lack of AC, so I found myself in way more situations where I was in a taxi, or at a restaurant with no AC, sweating my butt off.

Ok, this is probably getting off track from introducing myself.

If there are any expats in Cucuta who want to reach out, I would love to hear from you.  Also will go to Bucaramanga soon.

Cheers!

I am returning member of the group and thought I would say hello again. I landed in Salento a week before the lockdown and stayed for 13 months before returning to the US last May. I came back to Salento a month ago, to my lovely cabaña and garden and my lovely Colombian family. They have adopted me; I am la tía.

CaliRay

Welcome back. I'm still in the US after getting stuck here due to the virus and then some other stuff kept me here. I hope to return to Colombia in June.

I envy you, my Dear! I love Salento and Filandia!

Hello,  I am an American woman who spent last winter in panama and would like to see the difference in Columbia.
I would like to rent a reasonable priced apartment hopefully with wi-fi and a washer and dryer.
I often do housesitting and pet sitting and have many recommendations to share if someone needs that service.
I enjoy hiking, horseback riding, and exploring new cultures.

Hi All,

My name is Sallie.

I am an Aussie with a Colombian family here in Cali.

I absolutely love spending time with my Hubby's friends and Family, but I also search for fun and friends of my own.

I speak a decent level of Spanish and when I am weary....I search for English speaking friends who like to dine out, enjoy drinks or dancing or even just catch up for coffee and a chat.

If you are in Cali and like to socialise, message me!

Sal :)

@Julien

Hi. Although I'm no stranger to Medellin,  I used to fly down in the 1980's a lot,  I have been returning to the "City of Eternal Spring" more frequently over the past two years in contemplation of retirement.  In fact, I'll be there in May for dental implants.  I haven't quite decided about pulling the trigger, but my current cost of living in Manhattan is burdensome. I have published some articles related to my time in Colombia,  but intend to include a few chapters about my time there.
lwall49
Hi. There.  I am also thinking of getting dental implants in Columbia.  Could you share who you are using?  Thanks so much.

Please move the discussion of the important subject of dental implants .. to another thread or PM messaging.

@Julien Hello! I arrived in this magnificent city of Bogota a fortnight ago from India. After staying in a hotel for some days, moved into a leased accommodation a day before. Have already been to Plaza de Bolivar and jardin de botanical and of course el parque de virrey which is my neighbor..and I want to explore more. I work in an Indian company which has an asset here. I am also a certified forest therapy guide and conduct forest walks and meditations. Hope to do one soon here. Are there interest/ hobby groups that one can join? If there are any expats living around, lets catch up. Thanks.

Hi all,

I worked in Colombia in the 80's and 90's and fell in love. I traveled all over Colombia, from Leticia to Nuquí to Ipiales. Thinking of returning to retire in Colombia, maybe in the Oriente Antioqueño, maybe in the Eje Cafetero.

I am fully bilingual. I married a Colombian woman 26 years ago, so we have lots of friends and family in Colombia. Will be traveling to Colombia in August and September 2022 to places we have not been, like Bucaramanga and El Carmen de Viboral, as well as places where we have family: Bogotá, Cali, Paipa, Pereira, Chinchiná. New to this forum, but already familiar with many places in Colombia (though that was twenty years ago!)

Hello my name is Claudia,I have the best of both worlds and that is,that I have dual citizenship,Colombian and American.
I am a new member and my husband and I have a goal to retire and go back to Colombia,we are currently considering Cajica  Colombia, because we don't want to be right smack in the city and it is a lot more expensive.
I would like to explore other towns and also learn how to navigate in order to be able to invest our money and what are some good options.
I would really appreciate any guidance in this important step that we are going to take!

Cordially,
Claudia

Buen día a todos. I am Jeff, and I am an American interested in moving to Cartagena with my Venezuelan boyfriend early next year. We met in Aguascalientes Mexico and lived together there for a few years. I will be retiring in February 2023 and we want to live in a similar sized city that is close to his family in Venezuela (without living there). Cartagena sounds perfect to me, thus I am look forward to exploring this forum to learn what we need to know to possibly relocate there.

Dear Jeff,

Hi, I'm Theresa.  I'm an American who is wanting to move to Colombia permanently.  I spent about a year in Bucaramanga during the pandemic with my Colombian boyfriend.  Even though we fell out of love (haha); I really fell in love with Colombia and think the mountain cities of Medellin and Bucaramanga have the best climate in the world.  We have a child together, who currently only has American citizenship but could get Colombian through her father fairly easily (and me through her).  I'm hesitant to do that though because that would mean I'd have to get his permission every time I travel with her...and I travel a lot.  So I was thinking the investment visa would be the better route and I could buy a home in Cartagena, where her grandmother lives and she has cousins her age.  Although I'm not too concerned about Colombia becoming another Venezuela after the recent elections, I feel like it would however be prudent to not make any major financial commitments until I can see how Petro plans to do things.  That means I'm feeling kind of stuck at the moment and can't make a permanent move to Colombia.  I'll likely just spend 6 months there this year like I did last year in order to give myself more time to see how things pan out.  My current set-up isn't too bad as I pay $100/month towards her grandmother's rent and I have my own bedroom and bathroom there ready for whenever I need it.  But I can't continue to live half the year in the US and half in Colombia as my child gets closer to school age, so I'll have to make some decisions soon!

Dear Theresa,

Welcome to the Colombia forums of Expat.com...

Since we don't discuss these important matters back-and-forth
on this 'intros' thread, I have responded at length on
the Mailbag thread (see how to get there, above).

@Cheryl Muchísimas gracias Cheryl ☺️ The only complaint that I have about these expat forums is this; My boyfriend and I don’t seem to have much in common with the majority of American expats as far as their expectations of trying to live a similar lifestyle in South America as they lived in the USA. We don’t need or want a car, a condo with a swimming pool, daycare for children, etc.

I have already lived for several years in Mexico and I prefer the simple life. I have no desire to try and duplicate the consumer driven life that I lived in the USA, in fact, just the opposite. Ronaldo and I need a secure apartment in a safe barrio, reliable WiFi, fresh food and little else. We prefer travel, adventure and new experiences. We like to walk around the city, exercise in a basic gym and immerse ourselves in the local culture.

Also, we would like to network with other gay men to get their take on living in Cartagenera. When I have some free time, I’ll start a new thread on that topic.

Ha sido un placer visitarte 🤗

@Julien  I have lived here as expat for 12 years and enjoy Colombia.  I have worked here in the Oil & Gas industry as a consultant on many occasions.  My 4 children are 1/2 Colombian and 1/2 Texan.  They are all working professionals in the States, Actress, Lawyer, RN, and Lt in Marine Corps.  I am on a new journey now.  After my Colombian wife passed away a few years ago, I have met someone new from Bogota and after a long wait for her Fiance visa it was finally approved last month.  As per the terms of the Visa, she will have to stay in the US for minimum of 9 months (as we understand it currently) and therefore we are moving from our beautiful apartment in Usaquen/Santa Barbara.  We will be leaving on the 18th of July for the States and would like to help other expats if anyone is looking for a great apartment.

Hello: I’m Tolbert, and my wife Clara is originally from Pasto, Colombia. We live in Arlington, TX and looking to possibly retire in Medellin in a year.

After we saw the Carlos Vives concert last night in Dallas, and my wife is ready to move back asap! LOL

I’m a video editor by day, but my heart is in music. I’ve been a bass player since the mid-seventies and still play. I actually play more now around the DFW area than when I was in my late 20’s.

We want a healthier lifestyle and want to be able to walk or bike to the market, parks and adventure. We are sick of the traffic and weather in Texas.

I’m interested in meeting other musicians. I currently play for Mad World: A Tears For Fears Tribute band in Dallas, sub for dance party bands and play at church too. I love jazz, funk, R&B and pop/rock music and can read charts.  @madworldband

Hello all,

I'm new to this forum but am not necessarily new to living abroad in Latin America - my first experience was living in Costa Rica for a year back in the mid-80's (I LOVE CR and it's still my favorite place to visit) and that got me hooked on life in the tropics.  I joined the Peace Corps and served in Honduras for 4 years, married a Capitalina and later came back for another 3 years trying to start a business (failed but had a wonderful time doing so ;?). During that time I've traveled to every country in Central America except Nicaragua and I've wanted to come to South America for a very loooooong time, and now that I'm retired (and divorced1f60f.svg) I've finally decided to spend the next year or so traveling around to as many countries as I have on my bucket list, starting in Argentina where I am now.

BUT it's not turning out to be everything I hoped it would and that's largely due to the whole blue dollar exchange rate and all the hassle it's becoming to have to travel to Uruguay to get dollars, not to mention being unable to use credit cards for anything unless you enjoy paying almost double what you should have to, smh.  I am trying to do this on a budget so I've pretty much decided to change plans and look for another country where I can set up my "base of operations" and then venture forth from there. So Columbia was next on my radar and from what I've been reading I'm seriously looking at either Pereira or Medellin. So I'll be asking lots of questions and thanks in advance for any good advice or travel tips ;?)

cymerax

@tolbertpitman Just came from spending a month in Round Rock, TX and you have my condolences, lol, I just can't understand how anyone could put up with a month of triple digit temps (honestly there were only 2 days out of 31 that dipped below 100F), and yeah that DFW traffic is brutal ;?D
