Yep, cheaper than a visa because it's not actually a visa.

It's you simply registering for a visa exemption which is already your right.

VEC lasts for 5-years, no need to apply for the TRC if you are going to go back and forth. If you are going to spend longer than 6-months at a time then get a TRC.

All good advice above.   Think about what TRC stands for, namely Temporary Residence Card, and you will see why you can't logically get one from outside the country.  You have to be physically resident.

Also if you can get a VEC for $10 in Canada, that is excellent.    That's what I paid for my first one in 2012, while in Vietnam.   Now, from the consulates or the Embassy in the US, they are a little over $100, still a bargain.

Having watched the difference between how people with TRCs and people with VECs (especially Ciambella) were treated during the lockdowns, I would personally prefer to be living in Việt Nam on a TRC.

It seems that when everything is going smoothly in the country, it really doesn't matter much which authorization you have.

But with trouble brewing in the East Sea, I would want to be holding a TRC, in case pressure is put on VEC holders to leave.

Yes, that thinking includes some speculation on my part, but I just think that it's better to actually have a formal approval for residence than to have an exemption which, because of the 6-month limitation per stay, keeps the holder from actually establishing residence in Vietnam.

It would seem that in the eyes of the government, VEC holders are technically visitors.

Thanks OB for posting that old thread, I think I missed it some how. It sure does have alot of misinformation in it though. To answer your question, Yes. It was issued a little over 4 years ago,  still have about two years to go before I have to renew it. The validity is based on the the validity of your PP. I'll have a new PP when I renew and the PRC will be good for the full 10 years. I've never seen a TRC, but the PRC is just a thin piece of brown paper, laminated, with cheap saran wrap it feels like. Oh well, it works.

I think you applied after 3 years of marriage. If not, it's the new rule now.
When I started with the VEC thread, I had a spousal VEC which changed to a spousal TRC later to avoid hassle of border run for each 6 months(previously 3 months)!
I didn't even finish that spousal TRC (3 years) but changed to Investor TRC since 2018.
I really never going to obtain a PRC (in future) even if I am eligible

Just a quick update; I received my visa yesterday by FEDEX. All together, a fairly painless procedure.

What's are the pitfalls of a PRC? I've been married 4+ years now, so it appears to be an avenue for my retirement?

Thanks OB for posting that old thread, I think I missed it some how. It sure does have alot of misinformation in it though. To answer your question, Yes. It was issued a little over 4 years ago, still have about two years to go before I have to renew it. The validity is based on the the validity of your PP. I'll have a new PP when I renew and the PRC will be good for the full 10 years. I've never seen a TRC, but the PRC is just a thin piece of brown paper, laminated, with cheap saran wrap it feels like. Oh well, it works.

I just received my 3 year spousal TRC today in Hanoi (1 week after applying last Monday, 5 September).

It's a cheap piece of BLUE paper (with a red stamp on the back side) nicely laminated.

So I guess my goal now is to "go for the brown!" ??

How did it go for you this summer?

Having just gone through the process myself, I can assure you it should take less than a month (probably less than two weeks) from the time you get the police certification of residency in her home province to the time the TRC is available for your wife to pick up in Hanoi
