How/Where do I get a spousal TRC issued

My wife and I got married in her home town Ha Long during Tet 2018. We have a Vietnamese marriage certificate.
We live in Canada now and are planning on visiting Vietnam this summer.
My question is how do I get a TRC? Can I get it at the Vietnamese embassy in Canada, or do I enter on a tourist visa and try to get it in Ha Long? Because of work schedules I will only be in Ha Long 2 weeks this visit.

Enter Vietnam on a VEC (check the website for the embassy or consulate in Canada for more information).

Then you apply for your TRC.

Thanks, I am filling in the online form now. Simple. USD 10.00. Who knew?

Yep, cheaper than a visa because it's not actually a visa.

It's you simply registering for a visa exemption which is already your right.

Good luck in getting your TRC quickly.

VEC lasts for 5-years, no need to apply for the TRC if you are going to go back and forth. If you are going to spend longer than 6-months at a time then get a TRC.

All good advice above.   Think about what TRC stands for, namely Temporary Residence Card, and you will see why you can't logically get one from outside the country.  You have to be physically resident.

Also if you can get a VEC for $10 in Canada, that is excellent.    That's what I paid for my first one in 2012, while in Vietnam.   Now, from the consulates or the Embassy in the US, they are a little over $100, still a bargain.

Of course 😎👍

Having watched the difference between how people with TRCs and people with VECs (especially Ciambella) were treated during the lockdowns, I would personally prefer to be living in Việt Nam on a TRC.

It seems that when everything is going smoothly in the country, it really doesn't matter much which authorization you have.

But with trouble brewing in the East Sea, I would want to be holding a TRC, in case pressure is put on VEC holders to leave.

Yes, that thinking includes some speculation on my part, but I just think that it's better to actually have a formal approval for residence than to have an exemption which, because of the 6-month limitation per stay, keeps the holder from actually establishing residence in Vietnam.

It would seem that in the eyes of the government, VEC holders are technically visitors.

Thanks OB for posting that old thread, I think I missed it some how. It sure does have alot of misinformation in it though. To answer your question, Yes. It was issued a little over 4 years ago,  still have about two years to go before I have to renew it. The validity is based on the the validity of your PP. I'll have a new PP when I renew and the PRC will be good for the full 10 years. I've never seen a TRC, but the PRC is just a thin piece of brown paper, laminated, with cheap saran wrap it feels like. Oh well, it works.

He should complete at least 3 years with her to apply for the PRC :D
Anh Rick, I remember the time you posted about your PRC.
I think you applied after 3 years of marriage. If not, it's the new rule now.
When I started with the VEC thread, I had a spousal VEC which changed to a spousal TRC later to avoid hassle of border run for each 6 months(previously 3 months)!
I didn't even finish that spousal TRC (3 years) but changed to Investor TRC since 2018.
I really never going to obtain a PRC (in future) even if I am eligible :D:D

"After 3 years of marriage" Had to chuckle at that one Mr. "C". Kicking 45 years of bliss together. You must have that post confused with some one else.

Just a quick update; I received my visa yesterday by FEDEX. All together, a fairly painless procedure.

Thanks for the help.

What's are the pitfalls of a PRC? I've been married 4+ years now, so it appears to be an avenue for my retirement?

I know that you mean you received your Visa Exemption Certificate--VEC (which is technically not a "visa") but I'm clarifying here because tourist visas are currently not available except for eVisas.

There's no specific downside to a TRC and a lot of upside, especially if you're looking to live peacefully in Vietnam and not travel outside of the country much.

Also, with a TRC you actually have residency status, whereas with a VEC you are still technically a guest.

For you specifically as a Canadian, you might want to read up on some of the information being shared in this thread:

Another thought, based on the info in your OP:

As long as you are still just visiting Vietnam for 6 months or less at a time, don't worry about the TRC.

The VEC will continue to meet your needs for five years.

When you do get serious about full-time retirement in Vietnam, then you can easily switch to the TRC (in Vietnam, after entering with the VEC).

Yes, I think that's what we're going to do. My Vietnamese step-daughter doesn't finish Canadian High School until 2025, so we will live in Canada at least until then.

I just received my 3 year spousal TRC today in Hanoi (1 week after applying last Monday, 5 September).

It's a cheap piece of BLUE paper (with a red stamp on the back side) nicely laminated.

So I guess my goal now is to "go for the brown!" ??

I really have no clue beyond my VEC. So, I'll keep my ear to ground regarding these ever changing winds.

How did it go for you this summer?

Having just gone through the process myself, I can assure you it should take less than a month (probably less than two weeks) from the time you get the police certification of residency in her home province to the time the TRC is available for your wife to pick up in Hanoi
