I recently got an offer in ByteDance in Singapore. I was excited in the beginning but then I read about people working in 996 (9am to 9pm for 6days a week) I am really worried now. I understand that it is in China and the offer I got is in Singapore, it would be great if anyone can give me some insights on work life balance in ByteDance Singapore..

i don‘t know that company (you may try Linkedin to find people working there!), but in general you cannot expect Western standards of work and free time anywhere in Asia. Overtime work is universally expected (and rarely paid) and your annual leave entitlement is low. Check your contract!

Hi Beppi, I am sure you know TikTok. ByteDance is the Chinese company that owns TikTok.

Hi myquestionsg, I am guessing you got the job of Software Engineer in ByteDance. It is true that they expect you to work hard but they also pay very well (better than almost every software company in Singapore). It is not always 996 in Singapore but still quite demanding. I think you should join. In Singapore (and everywhere) there is high demand for software engineers and you can easily get another job if you want to leave ByteDance after a few months.

@myquestionsg have a friend who works for that company. It is hectic and she does have to work till midnight quite frequently. But again, i only know one person from there. Maybe it is not the case with every team/role. Good luck!

@myquestionsg probably resort to Glassdoor?

@singswan Hi singswan, yes. I am Software Engineer. While I am not expecting a 8hours a day, 40hours a week job, in my current company we are not bothered after we logoff. No midnight/adhoc calls. Even if something is not right on a weekend, people will not call each other. This is the only thing that bothers me. Even if I am paid less, I expect to be peaceful after my office hours to concentrate on my personal life. While pay is important, it is secondary concern in my list.

@TodayBye Hi, TodayBye, is your friend working in US or Singapore ? If it is Singapore, how is the work life balance there ?
