We are launching this exhibition on Friday March 24 (from 4 to 5:30) with a wine and cheese reception that will allow you to view the works and meet the artists. The works will remain on display during the following week.
The four artists (Hemu Aggarwal, Al Romano, Wendy Joseph, and Carmen del Reyes) show a variety of styles in the paintings, photography, and miniature sculptures.
Hemu’s works reflect the dynamism of the graphic art world, mixed with her imagination. Many of the works have been displayed in major international exhibitions and art competitions, including an exhibit at the Louvre in Paris. Her commercial art spans a career which includes designing album covers for The Beatles, Tom Jones, Quincy Jones, Mantovani, John Lennon and Yoko, various rap stars as well as package design of many of the toys we played with such, as GI Joe. Definitely it will be a trip down memory lane for many of us.
Al’s photographs reveal that the soul of the Dominican Republic lies in its landscapes. It has been said the photographic art is a moment frozen in time – but not just the image but the emotion, and that good photographic art can store emotion and feelings in a frame. In Al’s work you will find the difference between those of us who simply “snap pictures” and the artistic eye of a talented photographer.
Wendy’s lively paintings capture the rhythms and mysteries of life in the Dominican-Haitian barrios. Paintings of Dominican-Haitian experience are often relegated to cliché “souvenir” art. Wendy’s work transcends that category and is truly artistic expression. It has a simple beauty that will command your gaze and thoughts whenever you look at it.
On display will also be Carmen’s intricate 3-D paper sculptures of historic buildings in Puerto Plata. They are indeed intriguing views of buildings that we are all familiar with.
Do come. It will be an opportunity to meet others from the ex-pat community, reflect on the past season and look forward to the future together. Join us for a glass of Sangria on Friday March 24 at 4 pm. Note that The Meeting Place will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 3 as well as Tuesday to Thursday 11-4 for additional viewing of this exhibition.
Hemu Aggarwal’s artwork captivates the viewer with its visual beauty, harmony, vibrant colors, intense depth, and fluidity of motion. From swirling abstract dancers to brilliant underwater life, to bursts of flowers and greenery, her work intrigues, tells stories and creates moods, all at once.
Hemu was born in India, earned her MFA in graphic design at CCNY in the US and worked for over 40 years in graphic design. Her portfolio includes album covers for several major pop artists such as The Beatles, Tom Jones, Quincy Jones, Mantovani, John Lennon and Yoko Ono and rap artists including The Sugar Hill Gang and Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. She now resides in the Dominican Republic and lives in Costambar .
