The ensemble is legendary, marking its 90th jubilee in 2024, with a history tracing back to its foundation in 1934 by pianist Josef Páleníček. Over the decades, the trio has won numerous awards for its recordings, particularly of the Czech repertoire, including multiple BBC Music Magazine Chamber Music Awards and accolades from publications such as Diapason and Le Monde de la Musique. It continues to maintain a busy international schedule and will celebrate a Wigmore Hall residency this year.
The quest for national identity and independence fuelled Czech chamber music and helped shape the first three pieces in the Smetana Trio’s programme, which also includes Anton Arensky’s elegiac First Piano Trio, a haunting work greatly influenced by Tchaikovsky’s music.
