What insurance do you need in Luxembourg?

In Luxembourg, as elsewhere, there are compulsory types of insurance, others that are essential and still others that are useful depending on the circumstances. Truth be told, very few types of insurance are legally required in Luxembourg (imposed on everyone by law). However, some are contractually required, i.e. imposed by a contract.  This article aims to shed a little light onto this often confusing and jargon-filled world, to help you make sure that you are properly insured while you are living in Luxembourg.

Motor insurance

Motor insurance in Luxembourg operates on principles similar to those of other European countries: a mix of legal obligations to protect third parties and supplementary insurance for greater protection of the vehicle and its driver.

The legally mandatory part: Third Party Liability (TPL)

In Luxembourg, as in many countries, it is compulsory to take out third-party liability insurance for all motorised vehicles on public roads.

This mandatory minimum covers damage caused to third parties (bodily injury, property/material damage, etc.) in the event of a road accident involving the insured vehicle.

It is sometimes accompanied by optional cover such as fire and glass breakage, driver protection and/or road accidents covering family and passengers.

Accidents and damage to the vehicle

In France it is called tous risques, in Belgium omnium and in Luxembourg, casco. It may be total or partial, cover more or fewer situations, and may even apply when the driver of the insured car is at fault.

With this kind of insurance, having your damaged vehicle repaired or replaced needn't break the bank.

A word of advice: choose flexible insurance

The modularity of your car insurance will allow you to pay for cover that corresponds to the value of your vehicle and the risks to which you are exposed.

Mobilé motor insurance from Foyer is an example of modularity with four adaptable formulas.

Home insurance and general cover

Several types of insurance may be grouped into this category, but none of them is compulsory. Together, they aim to protect you and your family from damage caused to third parties, as well as your home and most of your possessions in the event of a loss.

Personal liability insurance: essential

To deal with certain personal risks, the least you can do is take out family liability insurance. It provides compensation for bodily injury and material, or immaterial damage suffered by third parties, for which you or members of your family could be held liable.

Not compulsory, but essential. Don't hesitate to add personal liability insurance to your insurance package.

Home insurance, often a requirement

Home insurance can cover both the building and its contents against all kinds of risks: fire, flood, vandalism, glass breakage, water damage, etc. If it is not required by law, it is generally required by contract, either as a tenant, through the lease agreement, or as a landlord, through the terms of the mortgage.

Insurance for valuables, technological or portable items

By default, certain categories of objects are excluded from standard home insurance. You should therefore consult the list of options in order to find the appropriate extensions to your cover.

Travel insurance

As an expatriate or newcomer, you will probably have to make regular return trips between Luxembourg and your country of origin.

There are very few specific local characteristics to detail. As elsewhere, remember that real travel insurance must include cancellation, baggage, medical care and assistance.

Don't be too quick to rely on the guarantees offered by credit card companies and airlines and check the reimbursement ceilings.

How to combine all this cover under a single insurance policy

There is an insurance policy that can do this all-in-one. It is available from Foyer and is called mozaïk. With this insurance, you can customise all the cover you need for personal accidents, your home and property.

Health insurance

Your health cover is structured on two levels:

Level 1 – Health insurance

Workers in Luxembourg are systematically covered by health insurance managed by the Caisse Nationale de Santé (CNS - National Health Insurance Fund). You don't need to do anything, your employer will take care of your registration.

However, this first level of health cover has its limits. It gives you a certain level of protection, with a reimbursement rate of around 88%.

Level 2 – Supplementary health insurance

For more comprehensive cover and a better reimbursement rate, you can do what almost 75% of Luxembourgers do and take out supplementary health insurance.

Your dental costs, sight-related expenses and many other medical treatments not covered by the CNS will therefore be covered.
