How to traveller is about the life of David, an Irish expat blogger who moved to Spain looking for new pastures. A job opportunity drove him from Malta to Costa del Sol after spending some time in Czechia and Malaysia. To those who are looking to travel or move to Spain, he speaks about his experiences and gives out some tips.

Tell us briefly about your expat life and where you're originally from.

My name is David, and I am originally from Ireland but have lived abroad since 2011. When I left Ireland with my wife Danya, we first moved to Malta and also spent time in Czechia and Malaysia before coming to Spain. We now make our home in the beautiful town of Estepona on the Costa del Sol.

What brought you to where you are now?

After spending four years in Malta, we felt that we needed to head for pastures new. Malta is a beautiful country, but it is getting quite over-crowded and expensive, and being an island, it is quite isolated. A work opportunity came up in Gibraltar, and we decided to move to the South of Spain to be able to explore this country to the fullest.

What made you want to start a blog?

My first blog (How to Malta) was about our experiences in Malta. Initially, I started it as a way to remember what we'd seen and done, and also to remind myself of how to take care of the various bits and pieces that are required of new arrivals to a foreign country. My current blog keeps the ‘how to' idea but is currently based on our experiences in Spain. I have always loved writing.

Tell us what your blog is about and how our readers can make the most of it.

My blog is about how to get by as an ex-pat in a new country, and it is also about our travel experiences both in Spain and in various countries around the world. If you want to find out what it's really like to move to a new country, then you should check it out! I try to write in a light-hearted and straight-forward way, so hopefully, people will find something of interest in there. I'm also pretty honest, so if I don't like something I will be sure to give it to you straight!

What are your next projects regarding your expat life?

We love living in the South of Spain; who wouldn't? Basically, we get to live in a holiday destination, except Estepona doesn't have the tackiness of other towns on the Costa and retains an authentic Spanish feel. For now, the focus is on work (me) and study (Danya) as well as enjoying everything that Spain has to offer.
