Finding a parking spot in Mauritius: How does it work?

With more than 600,000 cars on Mauritian roads, finding a parking spot is no easy feat. That is especially true in cities around the island, Port-Louis, Beau-Bassin / Rose-Hill, Quatre-Bornes,  Curepipe and Vacoas because parking is paid in cities but not in rural areas. Here is how the parking system works in Mauritius.

Parking

Street parking spots in Port-Louis, Curepipe, Quatre-Bornes and Rose-Hill city centres are paid.

Parking tickets are on sale in fuel stations and with certain suppliers in town centers and cost between Rs 100 and Rs 200. The price for parking varies from Rs 20 to Rs 30 per hour depending on the location. There are usually two parking zones: Zone 1 which is usually right in the city centre and Zone 2 a little further than the city centre. In most cases, you will find signs clearly indicating parking ticket requirements.

Depending on the type of parking zone, you will know which parking ticket to use. You have the option of private parking but these are usually more expensive.

However, you can avoid city centers and park in nearby streets. You can find free parking lots. Note that parking is free on our coasts or in the villages.
