Written byAnne-Lise Mtyon 04 March 2021

Mauritius to become an Agro-Processing Zone, the airport’s sanitary protocole deemed best for the region and a shelter for the homeless in Curepipe. Here is what made the headlines this week.

Mauritius soon to be an Agro-Processing Zone?

The announcement was made by the minister for Agriculture, Maneesh Gobin on March 2: Mauritius could soon specialize in the processing of locally grown produce. This Agro-Processing Zone will be announced in the next government budget and will empower operators in this sector but also the country to become more self-sufficient.

Mauritius airport rewarded for its sanitary protocole

Mauritius airport is the one that holds the highest level of health protocol and hygiene measures in the region according to the International Airports Council (ACI). With such a distinction, Mauritius consolidates its “COVID-safe” status. The authorities therefore expect this to help restart the tourism sector once the borders open.

Food imports for 2020

Food products constituted  46% of imported products in 2020 according to a report by Statistics Mauritius. This food import cost the state Rs 36 billion. Among the most important foods are rice, wheat, fish and fish products, dairy products and eggs, meat and meat products, and cooking oil.

A new shelter for the homeless

A building belonging to the town hall on Rémono road in Curepipe will be transformed into a night shelter for the homeless. Curepipe's city council unanimously approved this motion by Mayor Hans Marguerite last week. Renovation of the building is expected to begin shortly so that it can be completed before the onset of winter. The shelter will be open between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. and the homeless will be able to come there to shower, eat and sleep.
