Besides the easing of the lockdown, what is happening in Mauritius this week? First global underwater strike this week led by a Mauritian, solidarity around the disadvantaged during the lockdown...

First submarine strike

Her name is Shaama Sandoyeea. The 24-year-old Mauritian led the very first underwater climate event off the coast Seychelles, more precisely on the banks of Saya de Malha. Shaama Sandoyeea is also the founder of Fridays for Future Mauritius which is the Mauritian branch of Greta Thunberg's organization. The demonstration was organized by Fridays for Future Mauritius and Greenpeace. It intended to draw the attention of the authorities to the need to reduce carbon emissions, which involves protecting the oceans.

Solidarity in these uncertain times

This second lockdown is definitely the hardest on the disadvantaged. Indeed, many have lost their jobs and others who do not have specific sources of income are struggling to find something to put on the table. This is how several organizations across the island mobilized to provide the poorest with food. The Caritas, which has branches in several regions of the island, has mobilized its troops and organized distributions in several centers. Other organizations such as Foodwise also organize food and fundraisers. You will find these organizations on social networks should you wish to help.

20 people have recovered from COVID-19 since the start of the second wave

Since the start of the second wave, 20 people have been cured of COVID-19 in Mauritius. Which means they are no longer positive for the virus. They have been allowed to return home although they have to isolate for another week. On the other hand, the number of active cases in Mauritius rose to 210 and a new cluster was discovered in Vacoas. In addition, according to tests carried out in South Africa, there are no variants of the virus in Mauritius.
