I'm Laura and I moved from Wisconsin to Puerto Rico with my husband and two pre-school aged kids.

When and how did you decide to move to Puerto Rico? Is it complicated to settle down there?

We decided to move in May 2014, and by August 2014 we were here! It's not so complicated because it's still the United States, but getting health insurance, drivers licenses and utilities up and running can take time and patience.

Have you ever lived abroad before? How many countries have you visited?

I spent a year abroad in college living in London, England and absolutely loved it! I've traveled all over the USA and Canada, El Salvador, Ireland, Wales, France, Spain, Switzerland, Italy and Sweden.

What do you like the most about Puerto Rico?

The climate, the friendly people, and the chance to learn Spanish.

How is/was the cultural shock? What are the main differences with the US, your home country?

It took about 3 or 4 months to truly adjust I think. The major difference is the efficiency (or the lack thereof) of places like the DMV, business websites, traffic flow, road layout and bill paying.

Do you miss anything from your homeland?

Easier access to organic meats and fruits. And of course, my family.

Any 'memories of an expat' you would like to share with us? Your best souvenir? Or maybe your worst experience?

Haha...you'd have to read my blog :). I've had a blast learning salsa, teaching swing dancing in a nearby town, and touring around my new island with my kids.

What does your typical day as an expat in Puerto Rico look like?

Driving to and from my son's school, getting a Spanish lesson, talking with neighbors, playing with my kids, and planning my next get-together. I'm very social :).

When did you start your blog? For what reasons?

I started it right before we moved to share my experience not only with family and friends but for anyone else wanting information about moving to Puerto Rico. Not many people make major moves with little kids simply for adventure and not for a job.

Did you make new friends with your blog?

I have reached out to another Puerto Rican blogger who I ended up sharing Thanksgiving with and his daughter babysits my kids. But other than that, not personally.

Why did you register on

https://www.expat.com and what do you think of the website?

Originally I registered to learn about Puerto Rico and ask questions. I had only visited here for 3 days before deciding to move here. It's been helpful to read.

Which advice would you give to the other Expat blog members who would like to settle in Puerto Rico?

Ask questions on the forum, contact people directly, come and visit. It's a great place!

I am moving to Puerto Rico!!! I plan on moving in the next month. Is that practical?. I don't want to wait. I am a disabled veteran, my daughter is grown and married to a wonderful man, and I am free to do as I please. I have always loved the islands. I have never been to Puerto Rico but that doesn't stop me because there are people living there like you and others that are more than happy to assist me in my move. I just want to leave the continental US. Right now I am in the upper peninsula of Michigan. To COLD!! My daughter is still in Texas where she will probably stay because of their business. I have been procrastinating, but it is now TIME!!!. I don't want to visit, I want to live there.

We live in WI and have talked about moving to Puerto Rico. Our biggest issue is money. We work hard but can barely make ends meet here. So extra money is somewhat of a daydream. Realistically, What kind of funds do you need to do something like this?

Hi, Laura~ I've been following your blog and am enjoying it very much! Your children are adorable and I admire your gumption in this move with your family. My husband and I are retired and wanting to go and rent long term before we decide to make it permanent. Keep blogging away for us fans! Barbara
