Relocating during 2021: what you need to know

Thinking about moving and not sure where to start? We’ve put together our list of frequently asked moving questions to help you plan ahead for your next big move. You’ll find details regarding everything you need to know from deadlines and packing tips to navigating a post-pandemic world and documentation advice. Answers from our move experts have got you covered.

How much time do I need to start the moving process?

We recommend that you start the moving process about two to four months prior to your likely move date.

Can I do my own packing?

For international moves we are in a world of heightened security. Customs officials are far more likely to do an extensive inspection on an owner packed shipment. The cost of this inspection is often far greater than the cost of packing services. Crown relocation's recommendation is for customers to take advantage of our packing service and avoid any unnecessary customs hold ups.

What is considered a fragile item that would require crating?

Items that typically require crating are mirrors, glass or marble table tops, large paintings or pictures. Also included would be anything you consider delicate or high value that you would like added protection for during transport. If you choose to use a relocations agent they'll be able to provide you with a variety of options to make sure your fragile possessions are secure.

My company wants me to move. What if the cost of living is higher than in the destination city?

If you are considering a move to a city with a higher cost of living than where you currently live, you want to make sure that your new salary will make up the difference. A great way to compare cities is by using a cost of living comparison tool. There are several available online, including this one from Payscale

Also to be aware if moving with your company, any corporate initiation should really come through your HR department to ensure service level agreements are met and proper invoicing parties are confirmed.

How much time do I need before confirming my move?

We recommend confirming your booking as early as possible. With moves postponed in 2020 now ready to take place, we foresee a rather busy move season in 2021. If you do have a tight deadline please do check with us and we may be able to accommodate.

What do I do with any items I want in storage?

Some customers choose to leave items in storage at either their origin or destination country until they are settled in. If this is something you are considering, you could have your items shipped to your storage provider until you're ready for them. Alternatively, if you choose to use a relocations company, check if they have storage facilities on site you could use.

What are crews doing differently due to COVID regulations?

All packing and moving crews should have new protocols in place to protect their customers and staff. New protocols include:

  • Following local guidelines around social distancing and sanitization
  • Conducting virtual surveys instead of in-home surveys to provide estimates
  • Frequently sanitizing trucks and equipment
  • Practicing social distancing with customers and, as much as possible, among moving teams
  • Wearing masks and gloves
  • Keeping trucks stocked with hand sanitizer

All of these practices help ensure that moving services can remain available in a safe way.
