Road development remains one of the government's flagship projects. In addition to the metro, the government will also be introducing cycling paths across the island. Also in the news this week, Mauritius is preparing for the high tourist season.

Cycling lanes soon a reality on the island

This one will make cyclists happy: Mauritian roads will be equipped with cycling lanes. Indeed, the Road Development Authority (RDA) will build bike lanes along the roads that are being built across the island. The roads involved are Phase 1 of La Vigie - La Brasserie - Beaux Songes Link Road, Phase 2 of La Vigie - La Brasserie - Beaux Songes Link Road, the Verdun Bypass and finally along the Grade Separated Junction to link the Verdun Bypass and the St. Pierre Bypass.

The project will first be implemented in the City of Rose Hill. A call for proposals has already been issued. The work will go from Vandermeersch Street, to Camp-Levieux and Beau-Bassin, through the Balfour area. The aim of this project is to reduce the use of cars, and also ensure the safety of cyclists and motorcyclists who are the most vulnerable.

Tourism: Mauritius prepares for the high season

Nearly 500,000 tourists set foot on Mauritian soil from January to July this year. A more than decent performance as the country and the world of aviation recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. Of course we are not able to compete with the Seychelles or the Maldives, our performance is satisfactory. The government's objective is to reach 1 million tourists by the end of the year. Moreover, a new marketing strategy is being implemented with Europe remaining the main target market. An intensive communication campaign is also starting in Asian countries, especially in China and through Emirates. Mauritius hopes to return to its pre-Covid-19 level of activity soon.
