Every year in Mauritius, tropical cyclones bring their share of strong winds, heavy rains and floods, which can cause a lot of damage and disruption. Here are some tips to help you stay safe during the cyclone season in Mauritius.

Prepare for the worst

Mauritius is regularly visited by cyclones from March to December, so it's important to be prepared in advance.

Make sure you have emergency supplies on hand, including food, water, batteries and a first aid kit. Have an emergency plan in place and know the safest places to shelter in your area. If you live in a flood-prone area, make sure you know the evacuation route. Also, consider having trees trimmed to avoid nasty surprises. You can also reinforce your door and windows

Listen to official warnings

When a hurricane is approaching, the local government and other agencies will issue warnings and advice. Be sure to listen to these warnings and follow the advice given. This may include staying indoors, avoiding unnecessary travel and preparing for possible flooding.

The island has implemented a threshold warning classification ranging from 1 to 5.

  • Class 1: weak storm with winds ranging from 118 to 153 km/h
  • Class 2: moderate storm with winds ranging from 154 to 177 km/h
  • Class 3: strong storm with wind from 178 to 210 km/h
  • Class 4: very strong storm with winds from 211 to 249 km/h
  • Class 5: Devastating storm with winds of over 250 km/h

Please note that schools will be closed during a class 2 cyclone, and that it is strongly advised not to go out during a class 3 cyclone!

Store valuable objects and important documents

Before the hurricane arrives, make sure all your valuables, important documents and sentimental items are stored in a safe, waterproof and dust-free place. You should also back up all electronic data and store it in a safe place. Don't forget to shelter your vehicle/s. Finally, make sure your pets are safe during the storm!

After the storm

  • Do not touch broken electrical wires!
  • Stay away from flooded waterways.
  • Boil water before consuming it.
  • Drain water from your yard and roof to prevent mosquitoes.
