Mauritius: 56 years of independence and 32 years as a Republic

After a hiatus of four years due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Mauritians celebrated with great fervor the 56th Independence Day and the 32nd anniversary of the Republic on Tuesday, March 12th. The event was graced by the presence of the President of the Republic of India, Droupadi Murmu. Under the theme "Together We Advance," festivities kicked off with the flag-raising ceremony at Champs de Mars, followed by a parade featuring various units of the police force, police vehicles, and the traditional majorette performance. The day concluded with a cultural program showcasing local artists.

During his address, Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth announced an increase in the old-age pension to Rs 13,500 starting from April, fulfilling an electoral promise made in 2019. He also announced the promotion of 1,785 officers within the police force, including 1,500 new sergeants, 125 new inspectors, and 40 new chief police inspectors.

Four memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were signed between Mauritius and India following the visit of the Indian President. These agreements cover areas such as international financial services, public service commissions, amendment of the double taxation treaty, and cooperation between investigative agencies.

Dengue Fever: Four deaths and above 600 active cases

Authorities remain on high alert as dengue fever continues to spread in Mauritius and Rodrigues. Since December, a total of 4,244 cases have been reported, with 3,037 in Mauritius and 1,207 in Rodrigues. The Ministry of Health has reported four dengue-related deaths, with enhanced prevention measures in place, including fumigation and larviciding operations, as well as increased surveillance at healthcare facilities.
