Here are the neighbourhoods in Copenhagen ranked from most to least expensive. The different areas have unique characters and offer different views of the city. Keep in mind that a place closer to your workplace will help save costs on transport and lower commute times, especially in peak traffic hours.

City Centre and Christianshavn

Sporting the highest prices per square metre are properties in the city centre (known as 'Indre By'), particularly around the main shopping area and Strøget (Copenhagen's longest pedestrian street). High prices in the city centre and Christianshavn are also driven up because the city centre is relatively small with a minimal choice of lower-end properties.

Contributing to the hustle and bustle of the city are professionals at corporate companies, tourists, and those working in retail and tourism jobs. Shopping and meeting friends is a common activity here.

Nørrebro, Ãsterbro and Vesterbro

These areas are close enough to the city centre that commuting regularly will not be a problem. Cooperative housing, self-owned apartments and state-subsidised options are all available. Proper research and budgeting might help you find an affordable place in one of these areas.

Nørrebro has a good mix of cultures; if you like socialising and meeting people from all walks of life, the hip bars and cafes here will suit you well.

Ãsterbro is the eastern part and an area well-suited for double-income families with children. Shopping options are plenty, as are green spaces.

Vesterbro to the west of the city is especially popular with younger couples and students ' demand for housing is consistently high, so expect upper-end property prices. Expats, students, and working people populate this area equally.

Nordvest

This area lies between Vesterbro and Norrebro. It is the perfect area for students and generally offers affordable housing options, although demand is high.

Amager West and East

Amager is located across the harbour from Copenhagen and holds a mix of older and newly-built residences. Although prices vary, housing options here are still at the higher end of the market. Facilities in this part of the city include the IT University of Copenhagen and Copenhagen University's Søndre campus.

Connections to central Copenhagen are accessible enough since Amager's train stations are on the same line as the train that runs directly from central Copenhagen to the airport and vice versa. Bus and metro lines are also available and come at regular intervals.

Accommodation further away from public transport in Amager falls in the affordable range, while options close to the train stations are in the upper end for those with a mid-range budget. The island has Copenhagen's only beach and attracts a lot of visitors in the warmer seasons.

Valby and Vanløse

Moving out of the city centre and direct outlying districts, you can find more detached housing options with more green areas. Valby and Vanløse both have affordable housing options in accommodating residential areas, although certain properties in Valby continue to increase in value.

Vanløse is a leafy area and also has one of the biggest lakes in Copenhagen. If you're a country mouse and value getting out in nature, you'll be able to find a larger property here at an affordable price.

Brønshøj and Husum

Situated to the north of Copenhagen, these areas are more suburban with detached houses and larger gardens. Prices and competition for housing is much lower ' if you can afford a longer commute to work or don't need to head to the city centre often, property hunting in Brønshøy and Husum will be a less stressful exercise.

Both areas have large green areas and a more significant focus on convenience and grocery stores that suit everyday needs. As you move out from the city centre, the areas become quieter and less crowded.

Bispebjerg

Single students and young couples will be able to find property at a reasonable price in Bispebjerg; be warned, the housing options are small. Bispebjerg has been marked as a trendy, up-and-coming area especially popular with younger people.

Bispebjerg Cemetry is a great outdoor area for sports like jogging and biking all year round. You won't be bumping into many tourists out here.
