Hi everyone! I'm considering moving from Australia to Bali. Does anyone know whether Australian pensions (private and government) received by expats living in Indonesia (Indonesian resident for tax purposes) are subject to local Indonesian income ...
Indonesia and Australia have a bilateral tax agreement. If you fulfil your tax obligations in Australia (in your case, $0), you are not liable for taxation on the same pension income in Bali. If asked, you may need to show your Australian notice of ... Read More

As I said before, "There are no separate 'Social Security" contributions as such." All federal tax paid, whether it's income tax, GST, or anything else, goes into one giant bucket. The government, at its discretion, uses the money, via its budget ... Read More

You're off-track with your understanding and assessment of the Age Pension scheme in Australia. It is NOT a 'pension plan' or 'reverse life insurance'. It would therefore not be 'illegal' in the US. The system is totally different to that in the US ... Read More

As far as I know, the residency period needs to be a contiguous 10 years, although I understand there is some flexibility. That requirement was brought in a long time ago, when young Australians who became citizens after their parents migrated ... Read More

Yes, Australians contribute during their working life in OZ to the national pension scheme via tax. The income tax paid is designed to pay for the usual government expenses, which include the age pension scheme. There are no separate 'Social ... Read More

I fell foul of that same 'change' in January, receiving a letter saying that I was no longer considered an Australian resident living overseas, but an overseas resident formerly from Australia. The letter intimated that I would therefore lose my ... Read More

One thing that International branch of Centrelink look at is the continuous length of time spent living in Australia before going overseas to live. As I understand it, if this period exceeded 10 years, then provided other requirements are met, the ... Read More

Hi I am moving to Bali at the end of this year and would like to know about any international schools around the Jimbaran Bay area that anybody could recommend to me. Any information would be appreciated.
Be sure to check out the current situation with student visas at any proposed school. Recently the Jakarta administration stopped issuing student visas to foreign students under 17. As most International schools will only enrol students with a valid ... Read More

The tax thing is tricky. Technically you pay tax in Indonesia on your world-wide income (same as in Australia). However, Indo and Aus have a bi-lateral tax treaty, meaning you cannot pay tax twice for the same income. Most people would keep their ... Read More

The "six month" visa is usually a social visa (Social Budya)- but as far as I know, it allows you to stay for 2 months, then renew monthly up to a total of 6 months. There are certain conditions that would be best explained by a good agent, as ... Read More
