DIY queries renovating properties by susanyarrow10

I'm looking at a property that needs renovating and to cut down on costs, I hope to do some of the work myself. Can anyone explain how to obtain planning permission e.g. knocking down internal non-bearing walls, etc.

VasilisC

Minor renovations, such as plastering, painting, electrical and plumbing works do not require a permit. However, major construction works, particularly those that may be associated with bearing loads, must be made after consultation with a civil ... Read More

Buying property in Peloponnese queries by susanyarrow10

I'm considering buying a small place for semi-retirement and would like to know what sort of prices are being asked these days. Anyone have any contacts of where I could find out? Thanks

VasilisC

Prices depend on location and quality of construction. There is no "black or white" way to know about prices. Your best bet would be to contact a realty agency, after you have assessed chosen location and other factors common everywhere in the ... Read More

Dishwasher by adfortisaduivat

I have only had the dishwasher for two years and it is no longer working.I have had the repairman to look at it but he says its not worth it!!! He stated that because we are not there permanently the dishwasher ceases up!Has anyone else found this, ...

VasilisC

Contact the company that imports the brand or the nearest dealer (e.g. in Chania). A halfway decent dishwasher cannot have just two years of life. Mine is 23 years old (Ariston, an Italian brand) and still works without a problem. Read More

Health care on Lesvos by GlobeTrotter427

Greetings - I am 60 and based in the US, considering relocating to Lesvos. Are there medical specialists in Mitilini, or do you have to fly to Athens to see a specialist or have testing done (MRI, etc).Thank you!

VasilisC

There is only one state hospital in Lesvos supposedly providing full medical services but in most cases of free medical care, you have long waiting times.. If you have private insurance coverage or are willing to be charged you can be taken care of ... Read More

VasilisC

@Fred I have no idea. Most likely not. However, the very fact that insurance premium in the UK is higher for vehicles with the steering wheel on the left-hand side, means the accident statistics with "inappropriate" steering wheel position point to ... Read More

Apart from other reasons already cited, there is another majour reason for not taking your car to Greece, at least in my view: Steering wheel position. I think that it would be very dangerous to drive a right-hand wheel vehicle in European countries ... Read More

greek business and mafia by david anastasiadis

is real that in athens mafia can prevent me?

VasilisC

They will not prevent you, but most likely they will require their "protection fee" once you set up your business. Better try to find some people already in this business and get them to talk about this issue. They surely know much more than I do. Read More

I do not have personal experience with such situations. It is a widespread rumor that such shops are victimized by the local mafias, but don't expect to find out much more, as such groups operate under the law of  "Omerta" (silence), and often ... Read More

I don't mean that you cannot open a coffee/bar business with $80.000. Of course, you can. The question is how far you can go after the opening date. Will you get the business and profits that you expect? Read More
