trying to figure out where to move to in Canada (from US) by chochie
we are thinking of retiring to Canada from the US. we are wondering where we could find affordable housing near Vancouver. (300,000 or less). We would like to live somewhere where there is an artistic community.
One more info about living on the island - going for a trip to Vancouver would be pricey! We didn't do it for few years and I was surprised what we had to pay to go from the mainland to Victoria and back! Each person (over 12) 17.20 plus car ... Read More

Cannot agree more with what kirriemuir posted. The housing market in Vancouver (or lower mainland) area is terrible, hard to find something nice for a reasonable price. Read More

I was thinking about that too, the prices are lower than lower mainland, but not sure if THAT low. See what you can find in your price range. The average house in Victoria in 2015 was 608 thousand, in 2016 755 thousand (internet source). Condos are ... Read More

WOW, if you are looking for a house for 300,000 USD which is about 400,000 CAD, you will have to look very far from Vancouver. Even a condo in Vancouver starts from 1 million and up. It will be hard to find something like that in your price range in ... Read More

As VISITORS here, this country is entitled to put any laws and fees into place that they want to. It is legal, completely legal. A shake down is not, it is abuse of force, abuse of authority! We need to respect that we are visitors here and ... Read More

No matter where you stay, you need a tourist card. It applies for each visit, so when you come back next time, you will pay again. It does not matter how many times a year you come and go. Read More
opening a business before coming to DR with the help of a DR friend by rickspizzaonline
For the time being I won't be able to stay longer than a month in the DR. Would it be possible to have a friend of mine open the business for me and then have him hand it over to me when everything is in order?
Planner is right, you don't have to be a resident to open a company, sorry my mistake. I was thinking about the tourism licence. If you are planning to open a business that has to have a tourism licence, then you have to have a resident as a ... Read More

The paperwork takes time, so maybe start the registration / set up process, have a friend to keep an eye on it and follow up the next time you get back. For some type of a business, specially if you are setting up a limited company (called SLR here) ... Read More
airport/El Catey/Samana? by thecolonel
I arrive there late night, and apparently the taxi mafia tries to charge $60 just to Last Terrenas. Has any waited in the airport till morning when they could catch a guagua/chicken bus?
I think the charge is about right for the distance. Not that I agree with it, but that is what is charged anywhere else. You can maybe try to get it for 50 USD. If you add the cost of a hotel to stay overnight and a guagua the next day, plus the ... Read More

I'm a US citizen and I'm interested in marrying a Dominican woman. How do you prove a valid relationship when applying for a K-1 or fiance visa? How long does the whole process take? Thank you.
I met few people going through the process and applying for visa to different countries, not only USA and most of them took a minimum 1 year, some of them few years. A friend of mine, a US citizen who lived and worked here in DR for few years, was ... Read More
