I was actually born in Hungary, during the Hungarian revolution in 1956 my parents and two siblings emigrated to Canada. I was 6 years old. I went to school in Canada grew up there and also worked there. After that I met my now husband of 46 years (also Hungarian immigrant). In 1977-78 we had the good fortune to secure employment in our field in the U.S. When we retired in 2014-2015 (my hubby just a bit earlier), decided to live in Budapest to be near our daughter who is attending vet school in Budapest and her husband, who is also American, attending med school here. During our time here, we are learning about our re-found heritage, culture, and trying to re-assimilate. Every so often we also miss our way of life we left behind in the USA, and feel that we are like fish out of water. We can't seem to find that perfect happy place as we are not really rooted to either culture. This is an interesting topic that I would like to further delve into with other expats, how they feel...is it just a futile effort to try to find that perfect happy place or just accept what is and move on? ?
