Recommendations for tax advisors by rickbull673
Hey, I am trying to arrange a move over to Portugal in summer 2025. I have been given the green-light by my company to be hosted in Portugal via an EOR. However, the thought of potentially being taxed at 48% is a bit of a shocker! Does anyone know ...
@rickbull673 Maybe try BDO. They organized my NHR a long time ago. Now that this perk has come to an end I am wondering what I will do afterwards. Portugal is a high tax country and they try to make the most of "us". A bit like we made the most of ... Read More
Opening a Bank Account as a Non-resident by PaulDukey
Hi,I just got my D8 visa a week ago and I plan on moving to Portugal by the end of January. I was wondering if I could get pointers to how I would go about opening a bank account? I heard from an acquintance in Portugal, that currently it's very ...
@Strontium They didn't ask for proof of employment or income? Also, are you a non-resident? From what I understand, it has become increasingly difficult for a US citizen to open a bank account. This is mostly due to the Foreign Account Tax ... Read More
Silver Coast - Suggestions? by gwalks
Hubby and I are coming to explore the region in late May 2025 and intend to move in early spring 2026 (renting initially). The Silver Coast suits us in weather, population, and location --but I want to be sure we consider all our options. Our dream ...
@TGCampoIf you don't master the language, however, you're doomed to live in a language ghetto and you'll forever depend on paid helpers or more skilled friends in daily dealings. Honestly, I find it deplorable that some expats only manage to say ... Read More

Re. Tax to pay on the sale of a property outside Portugal by juliajonesjy
Hello everyone,I just sold a house outside Portugal and I am considered a Portuguese resident, does anybody know the percentage to pay on the capital gain to the Portuguese tax authority (IRS) ?ThanksJulia
@juliajonesjy When I sold my house in the UK 16:years ago and bought in Austria, no one cared about it. I'm guessing because it was from another country and didn't affect their rules. So I'm pretty sure the same would apply to Portugal. - ... Read More

Construction Quality in Portugal by TGCampo
On my recent walks around our area and in Lisbon, I noticed lots of civil construction work (mostly residential buildings) and I was shocked by the horrible quality. I have attached a picture that shows how badly done the brick work is. There is ...
I've lived in Portugal 3 years. My immigrant friends hired builders for large-scale reno projects. Everyone had MANY serious problems. Workers come & go at will, don't meet deadlines or listen to owners, argue, don't clean up, & leave things ... Read More

@donn25That's interesting. We are only 30 minutes south on the A8 and we didn't have any very low temperatures (<3 - 5 C) this year. While I think that we are lucky with our apartment with central heating and super good sun exposure, I agree that ... Read More

@mars60 The CM does a really good job with all the Xmas lights and the huge tree in front of the court house. And the CCC does have a program. I was wondering about the many closed down shops and restaurants (private businesses). Read More

Inquiries way down by Perpetual_traveler
Is it just my imagination or have the level of inquiries dropped way down since the NHR was effectively abolished? This forum used to have many new inquiries daily. Now it doesn't seem so. Perhaps also driven partly by the AIMA fiasco.
It's Christmas time The NHR continues to be available, although it has ended for pensioners. - @JohnnyPTUnfortunately so. NHR was really great for pensioners. I had my 10 years of 0% tax and cannot complain. However, without the NHR for pensioners a ... Read More

I think that you cannot simply terminate your contract without giving the landlord the opportunity to rectify the situation. This can take some time considering how hard it is to get qualified technicians. Before you moved in you should have checked ... Read More
