Looking for legal advise (family lawyer) in Amman

Dear All,

I hope this message finds you well. I was looking for some legal advise and an address of a qualified lawyer with solid knowledge in terms of family law. Me, myself, I have been to the Middle East for the last few years, on and off for work and study (Yemen, Jordan, Iraq, Syria etc.) and as I have been studying Arabic (Jordanian dialect) I came across a Jordanian colleague and we started to sympathize with each other - up to today. Of course as we got more interested with each other, we are both grown up adults and not that young anymore, we also discuss topics such as marriage and so on, both knowing that binational relationships of course bring challenges (as well as beautiful things) (I am born out of a binational relationship). So now when it comes to marrying, I have to admit, that as many of you know, the concept of marriage in many western cultures is simply not the same as it is for many Arab-muslim families. For me a marriage in itself does not consist of a problem, but as far as I know, there is no civil marriage as such in Jordan, not such as in many European countries, as such the law applied is / and or derives from the Sharia Law, which of course entails a certain set of rules, which for me is not unproblematic, despite the fact, that the two of us are absolutely in accordance on which way of life we want to live and what it contains, I still don't want to sign a paper just like this (no paper btw regardless which one without being fully informed about what it means in practice) without being informed about my rights and duties and vice versa. I am majorly worried about the part that gives the husband the possibility to restrict freedom of movement and access to work etc. So for me, no matter how much i trust a person and regardless of its country of origin or religion, this is difficult, as a matter of my own principles. Now I am curious to know, as I am sure there are plenty other expats who married Jordanians, also asking themselves these questions, how does it looks like in practice. I tend to over-analyze and overthink a lot. I know there is the possibility to make a marriage contract and to include agreements but still, I would like to know how this really works in practice and also I would like to know, if somebody of you, knows an address were i could get some legal advise specialized on this issue in Amman.

Thanks a lot :)

Kind regards,

Lina
