Citizenship application - Proof of economic integration

I don't know if this question as been asked and answered before, pardon me.

I am living here as EU family member and during the last five years of living together, I did a Master degree program and completed my PhD this September.

By January 2nd, 2023 I would be living here official for 5 years without interruption. As a result I am looking forward to apply for citizenship in January.

But during my PhD program I was paid via scholarship for the duration of the PhD, lately I realized that there was no social contribution ( because the HR team thought I was in Belgium as a student without knowing that I was here on the strength of my partners - EU family member card F).

So here are the facts:

  1. January 2nd, 2023 will make it five years that I have been living here uninterrupted
  2. Within this period I earned a MSc and PhD
  3. After my PhD, I started working with a company in November 2022 ( barely a month now)
  4. I already did integration program and I also have the required language certificate.
  5. This information is contained in the PhD bursary - "... bourse de doctorat, à temps plein (38h semaine)...."

My head ache at the moment is how to proof economic integration given that with my PhD bursary I did not pay tax and paid no social contribution ?

Anyone with experience or good knowledge of how to deal with this should please help me out.

Hi,

As I understand from my PhD colleagues, You can get your monthly salary slip from the university. It has something call RSZ contribution (which counts a s social security) which is automatically deducted from PhD scholarship. It counts as the requirement of economic integration

@Anup13 If I remember correctly HVA said I didn't pay social contribution. I got to know about this during the end of my PhD, I had to register with VDAB and VDAB sent me to HVA and HVA said I didn't qualify for unemployment benefits because I didn't pay social contribution. Fortunately, I got my current job the next week.

This is all confusing for me, because then they also told me that what I received was scholarship and no tax and no contribution was made.

Its possible. Some of my PhD friends acknowledged that their salary is taxed and some acknowledged that no social contribution that has been made. So, not all PhD is paid “salary” in its true meaning because its called Scholarship. Some PhD recruitment mentioned that its paid according to the wage scale abcxyz then its taxed. But if its called scholarship from some funds then yes its not taxed. So, in your case, if nothing show up as at least social contribution in the tax return each year then its correct that you have not been deducted the social security contribution.

@taizehere Hi,Please check out in this link. If Social security is deducted (which is done even for PhD scholarships), you can see it here. Good Luck!https://www.mypension.be/nl/mylegalpension/mycareer

@Anup13 Thanks for your reply but I logged into the site and found no activities relating to pension contribution during the period of my PhD.

Its weird that someone still confirm clearly that a PhD student get social security deducted. Its different depends on the type of work and why dont you believe in your employer as if they do not pay social security then you indeed cant find it anywhere???

What if someone worked for 3 years but have few months of C4 from the government?

Will that affect his or her application?

Thank you?
