Ferries along the Portuguese coast?

In Norway, where i grew up, we have something called a coastal steamer. Originally they had an important transport function, bringing cargo and mail up and down the coastline. Today they are mostly small cruise ships that give visitors a view of the very dramatic Norwegian coast from the comfort of a cabin or lounge. The weather in Norway is such that it is often better to view it from such a vantage point than to actually travel on foot or by road on shore. Cold winds and so on.

My point is: is there something similar in Portugal? Is there a boat from Lisbon to Porto or perhaps even Bordeaux, or the other way? The Norwegian coastal steamer makes stops at fishing ports and allows tourists to see what the country is like in terms of geography? There is very little stress on such voyages. When i was in my late teens i noticed similar lines in Greece?

Portugal is 10 years behind Greece and 20 years behind Norway so you have a long wait

@Trevor Lawrance Well, the Norwegian coastal steamer began in the nineteenth century :)

And the Greek ferries are quite old as well. Geography forced these solutions, you see.

I am asking because it would be a good way to see what sort of cozy and quaint villages (if any) that are dotted along the coastline. In Norway, this service has been a source of revenue as well. So, there is also an aspect of self interest. How can money be made etc

@MickeyWy,

The Portuguese coastline has nothing to do with the Norwegian coast, cut out with huge fjords, or the Greek coast, full of small islands. You can visit this country in another way. There are cruises but at a local level (Lisbon , Porto, Lagos, Portimão, Aveiro,...), mainly in rivers, or between the Algarve (Portimão) and the Madeira islands (Madeira and Porto Santo), or between the 9 islands of the Azores in the middle of Atlantic ocean, or between Peniche and Berlenga Island. The geography of mainland Portugal does not consider this transport profitable or useful to people, beyond tourism, unlike Norway or Greece ...

@Trevor,

Your post does not even merit comment. I have realised that your posts always have something bitter in them. I think the problem is with you and not with Portugal...

Hello everyone,

@ Trevor Lawrence, please be objective. We recommend members to be reasonable when posting on the forum. Your comment is left on the forum as the OP has responded but as you can see, it is very unwelcome.

Have a nice day,

That sounds wonderful. There is a ferry from Lisbon to Setubal and there is a ferry from Setubal to Troia. I’ve taken the one to Troia but not the one from Lisbon. One day…

-@antonanton4

Oh, I didn't know that. Form where does this ferry to Setubal leave and where can we find the schedule?

JohnnyPT

Hi Tom,

Setúbal/ Troia

@nz7521137 https://lisbonlisboaportugal.com/amp/li … y-amp.html  you can also take ferries to other locations around Lisbon. The ferry from Setubal runs every hour late into the night. I believe…until midnight.

Many thanks for the information. I have used those ferries - also the one from Setubal to Troia. I was wondering about a ferry from Lisbon to Setubal, which doesn't seem to exist. The latter is also good to know.

@Trevor Lawrance why are you saying that?

JohnnyPT

The great Irish Potato Famine did its psychological damage... It seems that it still holds to these days....

@nz7521137 no ferries to Setubal municipality. Only to

• Terreiro do Paço to Barreiro

• Cais do Sodré to Montijo

• Cais do Sodré to Seixal

• Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas

mall of which at I. Setubal district. Would be nice if it went to Setubal municipality.
