How to proceed - multi National family citizenships and residencies.

My wife and I are considering moving to Portugal but our situation seems a little complex as to how to proceed.

I am a British citizen and recently Naturalized American citizen. I've been living in the US for 40 years, currently in WA state. I am retired living on passive income and have deferred my SS retirement until 70. I have the option to withdraw from a private IRA but currently do so only when I need additional funds.

I recently married a Brazilian and I'm temporarily staying in Brazil while her US green card is processing (I recently received a Brazilian residence card in Nov). She is not retired and currently unemployed.

Although, her green card is in process, we are considering moving to Portugal instead as it would be easier for both of us language wise, as well as lifestyle, probably.

Trying to figure out a combined process for our visa application for moving to Portugal given citizenships and country of residence complications, specifically with regards to a starting point/country/embassy.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi seinfo3, Welcome.

Visas should always be requested at the Portuguese consulate in your country of residence, or through the VFS Global website where this service is outsourced. This is explained in this link from the Portuguese Foreign Affairs Ministry:

https://vistos.mne.gov.pt/pt/vistos-nac … de-a-a-f-2

Visa requirements for citizens from Brazil are the same as for citizens from the USA and the UK. The difference is that citizens from USA and Brazil can stay in Portugal without a visa for up to 90 days, while citizens from the UK can stay in Portugal without a visa for up to 6 months.

Thanks for your followup. I have read a lot of your previous posts and found them useful. Just trying to figure out how they apply to my situation. I have a residence in the US and residence permit for Brazil, where I am currently staying. Trying to figure out which is my country of residence.

FYI.... From the UK Gov site and one of your previous posts (https://www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.p … 42#5077438 ) , it states 90 days for UK citizens in Portugal, not 180 days.

You are right, it is also 90 days for the UK. Regarding the country of residence, where do you live now? Isn't it in Brazil? You have a residence permit for Brazil. Find out about it at a Portuguese consulate in Brazil near where you are living. Take a look at my first link above, it has there contacts of all the consulates in Brazil.

Thanks, I'll check out the links.
