@Carol2022 Hi Carol , we too are in the midst of the same . Currently we are back in Tipperary. Last time over my wife with an Irish passport got hers sorted by going to the offices in Alcobaca had to return a couple of weeks later and was given her five year stay permit. I with a UK passport have yet to progress but  currently sorting bits and pieces which I know they ll want. One is Police / Criminal record . two Health Insurance cover. Good luck !

Hello.  I have dual citizenship and one of them is the ROI.

I have just today had my NHR status approved.

I assume you have your NIF registered with your Portuguese address, have become a tax resident therefore, have your residency as an EU citizen, have access to the Portal das Financas via your NIF and password supplied by P d F which you can change to something that suits you.

Once all of this is in place, you can apply yourself on the P d F website.  Login and on the search bar type Nao habitual and click on the search button.

You need to select Entregar Pedido.

Then just fill in your information.  The starting year is the year you got your residency.  I made the mistake of putting 2023 and ran into problems.  I submitted a second application using 2022 when I got my residency in November and it all went through.

You have to apply for NHR by 31st of March 2023 if you got your residency prior to this date eg. last year.

This has been the process I have done.

I hope that helps.

I went to my local council in Tomar and got my Residency permit without the need for Health or financial records etc.

I had to get an attestation from my local council [Freguseria] office that I lived at my address.  The office gave me a form that I only had to get my two neighbours to fill out saying I lived at my address.  Then the local Freguseria gave me an attestation which I took to the Town Council in Tomar and together with my Irish passport and €15, I left with my Residency Certificate as an EU citizen.  I then had to go back to my local Freguseria and they registered it on their computer.  And that was that.

I know that if you are not an EU citizen [You say you are British] the process is different and I think you have to make an appointment and go to a SEF office.  You can download the form from the Portuguese Govt website.  It is only half a page to fill out.  Very simple and in English [and of course Portuguese and also French].  But I think you may need to show Health Insurance and financial evidence that you can support yourself.  Others may be able to tell you about this.  When my partner joins me next year with an Australian passport, we will have to go down the SEF route.

I hope this helps.

@gra2513 Being nosey where s your partner from in Aus we have a daughter in Melbourne went there for Christmas and the New Year a couple of years back and intend to do the same in 2023. Cracking city but expensive against the Euro.

Hi there, everywhere is expensive in Australia now.  Food is astronomical.  Went back a few years ago and could not believe the price then.  The equivalent of £4 for a sausage roll!

All capital cities are expensive.  A little less in country areas but with fuel costs for transporting goods, I can't imagine they would be much cheaper.

We are both from Brisbane.  I was born in Cairns.  Have been in the UK since 2009.  Love it but now in Portugal with beautiful weather and a fab place to live.

@deash107 Check out Medis for health insurance.  www.medis.pt   There is a simulator.  Go to the MENU and you will find it.  I am 70 and it recommended a cover.  It was about €36 a month.  Something nice and cheap while you get your residency.  When I discovered I didn't need it, I cancelled it.  I am in the SNS and as someone over 65, I get free health care.

Hope that helps especially to keep costs down.  The big international health insurance companies charge hundreds per month.  Horrendous.
