Can You Get Around Cuenca in a Wheelchair?

How difficult is it to navigate Cuenca sidewalks

if you're in a wheelchair?

Near impossible, according to U. of Cuenca findings.

Eighty-five percent of the streets of the city are

inaccessible to people with physical impediments,

according to the U. of Cuenca study.

214 sidewalks were studied.  Not a single one

complied with the relevant standards that should

be met to accommodate folks in wheelchairs or

other mobility aids to get around.

Alternative to Cuenca for the challenged.

An Expat who considers moving to Ecuador may

wish to look into the Mariscal sector in Quito

where getting around with a wheelchair or a

walking aid is less challenging than in Cuenca.

Although much of the capital city is hilly --

Centro Histórico for example --

Mariscal is extremely popular among

Expat visitors for the places and services the

sector offers, and also because the topography

is relatively flat.

Mariscal's Plaza Foch neighborhood is known

for its many international restaurant choices,

sports bars, nightclubs, hair salons where

inexpensive massage is available and

fruit shops.
