Secure your financial assets as an expat in Mauritius

Post new topic

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

As we navigate the exciting world of living and working in Mauritius, it's essential to make informed decisions about our financial future.
We’d love to hear about the different investment options available for expats: how to invest in Mauritius or in your home country, explore international options or use online accounts.

To kick off the discussion, here are some guiding questions:

What are the investment opportunities as an expat in Mauritius? Are there any specific investment programs?

In your opinion, what are the advantages and disadvantages of investing internationally ? How is your experience with international investments?

What specific points should you consider regarding your investments as an expat (exchange rate management, international tax obligations or repatriation of funds)?

Do you use specialized banking services for expats, such as multi-currency accounts? What are the pros of these services and how do they help you with your finances?

How is the property market for expats? Are there any specific regulations or aspects we should be aware of when investing in real estate in Mauritius?

What strategies do you apply to save and invest for your financial future in Mauritius and/or to secure your children's financial future?

Thank you very much for sharing your experience with us!

Mauritius is the ideal platform to create global wealth making use of one of the many international investment platforms available to investors. From Mauritius one can invest in Momentum Wealth International, Swissquote and NinetyOne Platform as a start.  There are also no exchange control issues, capital gains tax and dividend withholding taxes. And no inheritance taxes.

Many SA investment companies have offices now in Mauritius including Sanlam and Brenthurst Wealth with globally qualified advisors here to service the expat and local community. Brenthurst Wealth has just again been ranked in the top 3 boutique asset managers in the South Africa...for the 7th year in a row.

The motto is: live locally but invest globally.

@Magnus we often read in media articles or on the EDB website “there are also no exchange control issues, capital gains tax and dividend withholding taxes. And no inheritance taxes”.

Can you however list for us the types of taxes and duties that for example a South African expat WILL have to pay in Mauritius, e.g. when buying or selling property ?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of establishing a Trust or Foundation in Mauritius through which to buy property, to invest internationally in Momentum Wealth Guernsey, and in international shares through the SwissQuote app ?

If the South African expat should decide to divorce himself from the South African Revenue Service (I believe this is a 3 year process but more complicated than simply living in Mauritius for more than 183 days for 3 consecutive years ?) Would he or his Mauritian Trust/Foundation then pay tax according to the new Mauritian sliding scale between 0% and 20% and would this be beneficial?
