Mailing box of documents from Bogota to USA

I may need to send a box of documents from Bogota to VIrginia. Just paperwork on a case I am handling in the USA. I remember in my earliest stays in Bogota, that it was a nightmare sending even just a letter through the national mail system. It seemed that the system required employees to open my mail and check its content. Family in the USA notified me that personal mail I sent had been opened, even though it was a simple handwritten health directive. What is the situation now? What would be the best way to send my documents without worrying that they are thrown into confusion? DHL or other method? Thanks
