While there is great information by all you wonderful people, I can't seem to nail down some specific answers to questions I have so I'll be specific:

  1. I can get an extension at the airport upon arrival, correct?
  2. I'm staying for four months, does this change anything?
  3. What is the cost of the extension/fine for overstaying?

Thank you all so much, and sorry about the same old question. And handling this through the consulate here in the U.S. is kind of not an option as it's hundreds of miles away.

No, you can’t get the extension at the airport. You have to apply online during your first 30 days.

No. Extension is online

4,000 Rd is for 91 days to 9 months.

Happy 4th of July!

@darrenslewis I just left after being here for five months. At the customs booth at the airport they make the discovery and send you to a different booth to pay your overstay penalty. I was in line behind others paying. I paid approximately RD$4,000 and then headed to my plane. Simple as that.

To all  my fellow American Expats and anyone else that wishes to celebrate  the birth

of our great country…….Happy 4th…🥳

Just a point of distinction - customs/Aduanas and passport control/Migracion are two separate processes and government entities! When you leave the DR, you do NOT encounter DR customs at all! They are concerned with what comes INTO the country and you will only see them at arrival.

It is Migracion that reviews your passport on exit and collects the overstay penalty.

Not that I ever had a problem … but Which are the ones that ck your e ticket and ex-Ray the luggage on the way out

ddmcghee

@Tippj When you are leaving the country, airport security is the one that x-rays your carry-on bags as you walk through the metal detector. I've only been asked for my eTicket by the airline because that is attached to your passport and shows up when Migracion scans your passport. As long as everything is in order, they should never need to actually see your eTicket or the QR code.

Customs is always handled by the country you are entering. I haven't flown through Punta Cana in years, but they used to have US Customs and Immigration on this end. Before boarding a US-bound flight, you'd be cleared through both, and then the plane could land at a domestic gate at the US airport.

Thanks for explaining it ….👍 , yeah I go out of POP and they won’t let you through the door w/out seeing your e tickets… so they want to see it coming and going…..🙄
