Also i dont have International Drving License but I do have Car license of India.

yes vinay you can easily get the license.
You have to go to Indian embassy and get a approval of your license first they will check and give you a verified letter and you can go to JPN and submit it and get the conversion process if not you have to apply new license which would cost you rm 800 and have to go thru the driving school which are reconised by JPN.

thank you Vijay. What is approx timeline for the whole process of getting verfication from Indian embassy and the malaysian license.

I have Indian license and hopefully will get a verification letter from embassy, then what would be the cost of getting the license?

well Indian embassy would take one day but make sure you are there by morning 7.30 or 8 am to be on a safer side most of the times its a very long Q. Counter opens by 9am and they accept applications till 12.00pm only and after that they would ask you to come at 4.30pm and collect the documents from them. You have to pay about RM100 i guess for the chop which they give you not sure about the pricing. After that you have to go to JPJ n fill the form and give it and you would get your license on the same day within a hour but please check with JPJ sometimes they keep changing rules now n then based on the places. International license of India would not be valid here if you still hold also you have to go to embassy and get a approval chop stating its orginal then it would be valid. JPN cost would be RM150 for b2 (bike below 250 cc) license and for car not sure should be around RM200 i guess so. Hope I have answered both the questions here. Anything please let me know would surely help you guys.

I have IDP from India and I have my Indian driving license. As per information on this forum IDP is not valid beyond 6 months. Though my IDP is valid till Dec 2012, I would like to covert it to permanent driving license as I will be staying in KL at least 1 year from now. Kindly let me know latest procedure for converting IDP to permanent license.
Apart from this I am still confused whether to rent a car or buy an used one. Currently I am staying at Mont Kiara and my office location will be Cyberjaya where I will have to travel daily. My budget for car is RM 1K per month (I really don't want spend too much on car). Pls suggest which car should I go for and whether I should buy or rent.

Getting a Malaysian driving license is relatively easy.

Firstly, you can drive on a foreign license for up to three months. If you plan to stay longer term, you will need to transfer your foreign license to a Malaysian one. Some countries have "automatic conversion" and other require approval from JPJ Putrajaya. For more info, you can check this: convert your driving license to a Malaysian one.

If you don't have a license yet, it is a good idea to take the test in Malaysia. It is a lot easier than in most countries I've been to. The process is explained here: Getting a Malaysian driving license

Lastly, unlike some countries, you don't get a license valid forever. It costs 30RM per year and the maximum you can renew in one go is 5 years.

First you need to get proof from India/Indian High Commission that the licence is authentic. Once you have that you apply at nearest JPJ Office.
