Hello everyone,

Embarking on an expat journey to Denmark with children presents unique challenges, particularly concerning the financial considerations related to raising kids. Whether you are planning to relocate to Denmark or have already begun your expat life, understanding these aspects will help you manage your budget and ensure the well-being of your children in their new environment.

To kick off the discussion, we have gathered a few questions. We encourage you to share your experiences and insights on the topic:

How do the costs of raising a child in Denmark differ from your home country? What is the most significant expense related to childhood in Denmark?

Are child-related services in Denmark affordable?

Is there any financial support available for expat families, or is it reserved only for local citizens?

What is the estimated cost of medical expenses and routine healthcare for your child?

Are there affordable options for child activities, such as sports clubs or music lessons?

What are your tips to manage your budget effectively in Denmark  (clothing and equipment rentals, swaps, parent groups, etc.)?

We look forward to hearing your responses and testimonials on this topic.
Thank you for your contributions.

Hello Cheryl,

Denmark is a very child friendly place and expenses related to children are mostly related to the activities they take up based on their interests.

Hope, below answers can help you in having a basic understanding.

How do the costs of raising a child in Denmark differ from your home country? What is the most significant expense related to childhood in Denmark?

  • I cannot compare the costs with my home country as my kids grew up here. However, the most significant costs are for the daycare / after school. However, the fee will vary based on the locality (kommune you live in and the family income level).

Are child-related services in Denmark affordable?

  • Yes, they are very much budget friendly and affordable compared to UK for example.

Is there any financial support available for expat families, or is it reserved only for local citizens?

  • If you are a EU citizen and moving to Denmark I believe you are eligible to receive family support as soon as you register in the local kommune. If you are from a non-EU country you might have to wait up to 6 years to start receiving it.

What is the estimated cost of medical expenses and routine healthcare for your child?

  • All basic public health care is free in Denmark except for the Dental, cosmetic etc. Same applies to Kids as well. However, few take private insurance linked to their employer to avoid waiting times.

Are there affordable options for child activities, such as sports clubs or music lessons?

  • Yes, you can register with local activity clubs (sports, music, swimming etc) which are affordable and are budget friendly as they are associated with local kommunes.

What are your tips to manage your budget effectively in Denmark  (clothing and equipment rentals, swaps, parent groups, etc.)?

  • There are many facebook groups for used & sometimes free equipment, clothing etc. You just need to browse around.
