@jamessmall1414 Since you are already in Germany with your family, you should know the price structure and your personal expense range. Apart from rent (for which you should consult Hamburg's official "Mietspiegel"), I would not expect it to change much due to a move from Berlin to Hamburg.

In the end, it is up to your negotiation skills whether you ask for more, whether you then get it, or not.

€80k/yr is already above average by German standards, but of course only you (and the employer) can judge your market worth and which risks you are willing to take.

As Beppi mentioned, this is already well above a national average salary in Germany. Hamburg might turn out to be a bit more expensive than Berlin but not significantly so. A major factor comes down to the accommodation one finds which is always a trade-off of price and desirability anyway.  I personally like Hamburg much more than Berlin, so given such a choice I would go with Hamburg.

But if one is really worried about losing their job then it seems like a no brainer. Sometimes better to take even less money than to end up unemployed. And the work atmosphere would be a major concern for me. At such a level, I would prefer 10% less money but working with friendly, creative co-workers doing fulfilling things than having a lousy atmosphere doing work I hated. Seems it takes a level of maturity or hindsight for most people to appreciate that salary isn’t everything. But I guess some workers in jobs in high demand have the luxury to wait and see if they don’t find a better offer.
