New windows and doors

I've just had new windows and doors fitted to my village house today. They arrived about 10.15 am and worked non stop to replace nine windows and frames  with double glazed ones, one regular sized door and a double type door into the basement. I think that they'd finished by 3pm cannot fault their work but now I've got the general sweeping and tidying up to do .

Also my next door neighbour took the old windows away , some where still in their metal frames and some just panes of glass, I wonder what they'll use them for?

What does any of this have to do with expatriation??? This isn't Facebook.

Perhaps the old windows will be changed in his barn or  for a future greenhouse?

kaththomas700

That's what I thought Tatiana.

Thank you Kathy I really hope so.  Our house was done up to appeal to " rich" buyers  and we fell for it but although it had new windows they were only single glazed and the basement door was so old that we only had one key for it and try as we might in the Burgas area we couldn't get another . Then when we were in Sofia I managed to buy another!!!

Well Kath everything is a learning curve. As long as you manage to turn things around. It seems a bit of a mine field buying. I have still to get to that point as I'm still looking. Anyway you now have peace of mind that they are done properly. You will get there. Everything takes time. Just look ahead and enjoy your home now. I wish you happy years ahead.

I'm glad it went well, Kath. I'm a little nervous about getting mine done after hearing that some window replacement guys leave the wall in a mess  around the window and don't make good any damage from pulling out the old ones!

Very necessary though. I think a sheet of paper would stop the drafts just as efffectively as my house's old single glazed windows!

kaththomas700

I have been left with two areas of damage plaster Jane one inside and one out. But on the whole not too bad and I can tell the difference now both in sound elimination and heat retention . But now I've got to find someone to repair the small areas of damage.

@janemulberry

They pretty much just fix the new windows in place, and foam any gaps. But if you have the windows made-to-measure (obviously the better option), the gaps will be very small and the damage fairly minor. Having someone make good after is not a huge job, so I don't think you need to worry unduly.

@kaththomas700 Hi Kath - did you buy off-the-shelf prom somewhere like Praktiker or get them made to measure? If so, who did you use, please...an urgent first task before we move our belonging in (Hopefully May/ June visa permitting!)

kaththomas700

I bought from a company not very far from my village. They came measured up , gave me a price which I excepted and they fitted them a couple of weeks later on the date that they set.

kaththomas700

Mind you I'm still looking for someone to make good the damages around the a window and a door. But it's the wrong time of the year to do outside works like cementing.

georgewheelwright

@kaththomas700 outside has to be concrete Kath, inside top coat plaster of ready mixed fller , it's an easy job 👌

Kath948381

Thank you George , if I was younger a ND d fitter I'd try to do it myself but as a pensioner with bad knees that have been replaced I'll try to find someone younger, fitter with the  required skills.

georgewheelwright

Well we're hoping to be in BG very soon ,if I was near I would  come and do it for a cuppa and a bacon roll  xx

There are several big companies with showrooms in all parts of the country, as well as small local firms all offering made to measure windows, doors, blinds etc. Very few, if any, make good afterwards. Luckily my wife is a fab hand at plastering, tiling et al; electrics and plumbing are left to me.....1f601.svg

I'm having a bacon, egg and tomato buttie for my tea tonight.
