Would love to talk to someone about moving to PR

Hi all,

I am planning to move to Puerto Rico in about 2 years. I need to finish some course work in the US and learn Spanish. I am looking at Ponce to move to. I have so many questions and would love to talk to someone who is already living there and working. I am single, 60 years old, and will plan to work remotely in PR. So I don't have children and not really interested in schools in the area. I like museums, libraries, restaurants and coffee shops. A lively area that is safe and not super noisy at night.

Are  any of you interested in emailing back and forth so I can ask some questions? This seems like a daunting process, but I have learned a lot online.

Thank you,

Elizabeth

Hello ElizabethPR: Just a quick heads-up. Ponce is pretty hot and dry year around. Housing prices are low due to above average trembling activity. Locals are used to it and love Ponce no matter what...just thought you should know so your not freaked-out when you move here. BTW, I don't live in Ponce, but my grandparents were born and raised in Ponce. That's all I have.

Elizabeth, I am /not/ local but I want to add a heads-up about one thing: look into what's required in order to work remotely. I don't know whether you plan to do that as an employee (e.g. on staff with a mainland company) or self-employed. If self-employed, there seems to be a lot of paperwork and it's not cheap. (I've freelanced in five mainland states and PR requirements look much tougher.)

My impression (I'm basically in the same boat as you, still researching this) is that working remotely is daunting but do-able. ("Digital nomads" do it all the time but I don't know how high their income bracket has to be to do it comfortably.) OTOH if you have a steady job with a mainland company, that's a whole different scene and I'm guessing maybe easier.

So my first advice would be to check it out carefully and my second advice would be don't be scared off by it. Good luck with your plans!

I don't know how much time you have spent in PR, but I would recommend coming down and trying a few places before you decide on a spot.  Ponce has a lot of beautiful architecture, though a lot was damaged in the recent quakes.  It is also a pretty rough town and not a particularly favorite spot for expats.

@wpotvin Could you say more about what you mean by "rough town"?
